A while ago I had a sweet rifle put together for punching paper at distance. Its a .308 Savage in an XLR stock. I like the Hornady 208 gr in my 1:10 28" barrel. Is there a bullet that will double role for percision shooting to 800m, as well as be ethical on big game to 600 yards? I know there are some guys useing the A-max with success, but the bullet isn't designed to hold together and penetrate reliably like a hunting bullet. I have yet to try the Berger VLD 210gr, would this be the top contender? Monkeying around with loads for a couple different setups would take more time than my day job allows right now. So is there a bullet to fill both roles?

I had extremely good accuracy when load testing for my hunting rounds with Swift Scirocco II's. Extremely consistent bullet and a decent BC.

Can't comment on them at those ranges on game but might be at least worth looking at.Also I am using it with 7mm bullets so not exactly an exact comparison.

That is a 5 shot 100 yards group.

I have had good results at distance on paper and animals with Nosler silvertips. 180 grain. Some feel they expand too easily but I've hit moose with a 30-06 at roughly 400 yards and it punched through the ribs and turned the heart and lungs into useless junk. That's good enough for me.

What Wheels and AKD said.

Berger's "Hunting Match" (Orange boxes) rounds are the very same bullets they have always produced for match shooting but their more recent designs have been made with thicker jackets for use in very high velocity match rounds. Because these are not as frangible, they are designated as match bullets only, whereas the old styles live on as hunting AND match. I used a 6mm 105 Hunting Match to take a whitetail this past year.

In my TC Warlord the 178 Hornady A-Max are accurate beyond belief , just reload a 100 of them, leaving for the range, if the conditions are good i expect less than .25 for most of my grouping at 200 metres, this rifle is just starting to show me its potential, i believe at one point it could top both my TRG, we will see... JP.

Matrix 210 VLD? Never heard of these bullets before. Bonded/fused core, and a high BC. Compared to the Berger VLD, what are your thoughts? The price seems good... have they built a reputation? Might try both, see which my rifle likes better...

the 210 Berger's shot extremely well for me, I now have several boxes collecting dust since trying the 210 Matrix VLD's

whats the point of hunting at 600 yards

if you cant get 100-200 yards away then you should not be shooting at the game

and you also want expanding bullets a bullet .308" is not going to take out game unless you hit the spine or hart so expansion is needed

Occasionally a deer or antelope may raise an eyebrow, and a long shot employed. Most of my hunting is under 200 yards, but you never know. That rifle will stay in is case likely, but oppertunity and desire for that long shot might bring it out. To that end, having a bullet you can count on would be nice. 99% of the shooting will be on misc. targets, likely not to be used as a "hunting" rifle. The question is one of long range accuracy primarly, terminal performance as a cross over into hunting as a possibility. Around here there is plenty of oppertunity to shoot deer to 800 yards, would I? Not likely, no. 500-600? under appropriate conditions, and only if I was sure. I have my "hunting rifle" that I hunt with. This one is primarly a target rifle. Too heavy for bush beating, but from a stable rest, ground blind, or tree stand, it has a place. I also bow hunt, so getting under 200 yards is not an issue. My ability to shoot game at 100 to 200 yards is not in question, and is not an issue.

Thanks guys for you views and experiences. Would love to here more.

Marshall's Matrix bullets are friggen amazing as match bullets. I am not sure if they are designed for dual duty or not. Made in Canada too.

I emailed Marshall, he mentioned the Matrix, and the Berger VLD's employ similar components, and are constructed virtually the same way. Quote "essentially same construction, same jacket, performance would be similar." I am not familliar with either bullet, but plan to be, Had thought Berger was "it", but the Matrix, being made in Canada, its price, and amazing specs (BC in particular) got me itching. I'm gonna get some of each anyways, but am now wondering if they (Matrix) would indeed have a dual duty role, like the Berger.

This sounds like the same logic used by the "anti's" for banning weapons that aren't "hunting rifles". Do you really believe that taking game past 200 yards cant done? You should come out west some time, I think it might do wonders for your hunting and shooting skills.
