So I recently bought a CSA SA VZ 58 Sporter. And I am curious if anyone has headspaced one? I know you're not supposed to fire 5.56 out of a .223 stamped firearms but csa's website says this specific model is good to fire 5.56. If this is true and is indeed safe how can it be stamped .223? Sorry if this has been asked before, I did some googling and used the search tab but was not able to find an answer.

Link to CSA'S website showing their note at the top about 5.56.

Thanks.

Don't know if it's the case here or not, but I've heard that rifles marked .223 are classified a sporting rifles, and can make import easier.

CSA is famous for inconstantly marking their guns. I've seen some marked .223 and some marked 5.56. If the owners manual or their website its safe, then don't even second guess it and just shoot. .

.223 REM and .223 are not the same.
.223 and .556 are the same.

Not sure I agree Paddy........ .223 and 5.56 to be correct are not even exactly alike but will fire safely in some guns. What .223 is not like .223 Rem that you talk about? Sorry if I am misinformed, and if I am please correct me.

Mine is marked 5.56 and I've shot XM193 and some IVI marked 5.56 with no issues.

So far I've put American Eagle .223 and XM193. Tula steel case and Norinco and the rifle has been excellent.

The one I own is marked .223 Rem. So I'm apprehensive to shoot 5.56 out of it even though the website pretty clearly says it's ok. I was just hoping some has had their Vz 58 headspaced. Funny too how the note about 5.56 being ok is not mentioned in the owners manual at all.

.223 REM and .223 are not the same.
.223 and .556 are the same.

The reason I believe this is because you will see a lot of NATO chambered rifles and ammo marketed as .223, and that is not incorrect. But it would be incorrect to market a .223 Remington as 5.56 NATO.

".223 REM and .223 are not the same."

In my experience if someone says its a .223 rifle, this means its a 223 Remington as most people do not assume that its a .223 Ackley Improved. NO? Or is there another 223 that we could be talking about that I don't know of?

On the CSA website it actually says its safe to fire .223 and will " Easily digest the military surplus 5.56 as well".

No it isn't Paddy, its in .223 . I own one. Click on the link supplied by the OP and read the contents of the website.

Here's the link, not hotlinked take out the space in the http

I assure you the vz-58 is offered in .222 REM chambering For countries that don't allow civilian use of NATO rifles or ammo. It would be easy to assume that all the Canadian rifles are .223 but that could be the problem. The only REM spec chamber offered by CSA last I checked was the .222.

I followed your link and you are correct they are marketing a 5.56 chamber as a .223 rem. I can also assure you that a Remington 700 won't chamber 5.56 without struggle we clearly know it's not a REM spec chamber regardless of there marketing claims.

Oh and sorry about the stupid double post but I definitely think that .223rem isnt the best choice of barrel stamp for that rifle.

Not sure that its available in 222(I stand corrected it is. don't know of any here in Canada though), but I may be wrong. BUT, I do believe we are talking about a Canadian Gun Owner with a rifle he is wondering about the use of 223/5.56 ammo and what is safe to fire in guns available in Canada. Aren't we?

There is so much bull#### surrounding this subject it just blows my mind. It continues to get worse and worse every single year. Its like people make this @#$% up at they go along. Couple things to note guys, there is no such thing as 5.56 reloading dies. Just .223 Rem. Can you run a 5.56 case in a .223 Rem die set? Ya you can because they're the same @#$%ing thing. Will a .223 chambered rifle withstand the pressure of a 5.56? Let me put it this way, The pressure that the action of a modern .223 rifle can handle far exceeds what the case itself can handle. If you're still in doubt, then only shoot what the gun is marked for and listen to what the manufacture says.
