When i was down in the US i noticed the most affordable ammo around was the Russian 5.45x39 used in the AK-74 , 2000 rounds for under $200! Ive heard very good things about the performance of this 60 grain round . Well i was thinking if a company like CSA can make a .556 VZ-58 then they can easy make a 5.45x39 VZ-58 and even better they can make it to use AK-74 mags? so what do you guys think?

Yo dem two bullets .556 and 5.45x39 have near identical ballistics but ones less than 1/4 the price strait up yo ..
It's a great idea. I quite liked the 5.45 in the AK.
Moot point without the cheap ammo, though. It would be a "buy a pallet of ammo" proposition if it did come true, IMO. There's a lot more 7.62 available on the surplus market than 5.45 and you'd want to ensure a lifetime supply.

Ya in Canada there is alot more 7.62 on the market because we dont have any rifles that fire the 5,45 but from what i was told by a large ammo dealer in the US is the russian and other ussr countries surplus 7.62x39 is starting to dry up because they switched over to the 5.45 as their standard round in 1974 and still use and make it today , he said there is a s**tload of the stuff thats been made since 1974 .. its the most common cheapest surplus ammo by far .. maybe Marstar or another ammo importer can chime in here ..
If you've never shot 5.45mm its a treat, 20%+ lower operating pressure and just over HALF the recoil of 5.56 ball, yet the downrange effect is similar. The fact that its super cheap, is comparable in accuracy to, and even lighter per round than 5.56 make it extremely worthy.
I'd be all over a 5.45 Vz58, my only concern would be magazines; I would much rather run '74 mags over some weird proprietary items.

Need a few balls to line up in order to sink this one though. The party to get it started needs to be an ammo importer that has a working relationship with a willing manufacturer. Does North Sylva import ammo as well or just firearms? I could think of Johnone getting FSN factory guys to do it, possibly.....
I swear I saw 5.45mm being sold in 1080 round spam cans when I was browsing through a Canadian retailer's site sometime last year.

The sad part is there are already uppers in this calibre available in the US from companies like S&W and Spike's.
I wish I could remember the price for the spam can I seen, but IIRC it was considerably less than a case of Czech 7.62x39. More than the cost savings though is the fact that you're getting a round that uses modern streamlined bullets and has a good 200 meters more in the way of effective range.
