current manufacture Winchester Model 70 Sporter .300 Win Mag

My local CT gun rack has one and from what I can tell before my breath and drool fog up the glass, it is a very nicely made hunting rifle. Fit and finish is excellent, to my eye it's the nicest gun on their rack by a long shot. I would have bought it but Winchester no longer makes left handed M70 rifles for us southpaws.

All of my M-70's are quite a bit older than new (some a lot older) but of the new ones I've looked at, they seem to be well enough finished. I've had lots of M-70's over the years and the only one I ever had trouble with was one of the first "classic" that came out in the late eighties or early nineties, they had some QC issues in those days but cleaned up their act after a while. I wouldn't be afraid of an M-70, it's an old school action and they work!

I'm liking the current production M70s; things have good since production resumed. Before that; well take them on a case by case basis. Quality was spotty for about 3 decades. I like M70s, but they made it hard.

The new Portugal assembled ones are fantastic. I would take one of them over any 100% usa made ones all day everyday. Fit, finish, blueing, and accuracy are fantastic.

Quality is top notch on the new CRF Winchesters! The sporter feels a little big and heavy for my rifle tastes, the Featherweight and I really get along though.

As stated above, fit and finish of the action is excellent. Truly a fine piece of equipment. Wood will vary slightly from rifle to rifle. If I’m buying a wood stock I prefer to see it in person. You should be very pleased with the rifle.
