I bought my first 1911, a Para LTC Steel and finally got it out to the range on Saturday. For the most part it's comfortable to shoot but what really surprised me was that I shot WAY better than with my Beretta 96, which has been my favorite until this point. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to get another 1911 now :D

You know, everything I read said on this site talked about how you get hooked in with the 1911s. I didn't think much of that as most people say that about handguns, whether it's caliber or brand ("Oh once you buy a SIG you'll never buy anything else"). But with my 1911 it's so true. I found it much less snappy than my .40 S&W and like I mentioned above, much more accurate. I thought the grip safety would drive me nuts but I never even noticed it. The ONLY thing I would mildly complain about was that the checkering on the backstrap below the safety did bite into my hand a bit, even with a firm grip.

I to own a 1911 in 45acp and found I shot better than I thought I would. It is comfortable in the hand. Looking at a conversion kit from Kimber for firing 22's. so I can go "Nutz" blowing away ammo. May have to get into reloading for the cost savings of the 45.

I'm thinking of the conversion kit as well. For now I'll just have to pick up a case. TSE had 500 rounds of .45 for $235 I think.

While I'm happy with the Para, I just saw TSE's new prices on the Kimbers and I think for the price difference I might have held out for a Kimber Compact stainless. I've heard nothing but great things about the Kimbers.

Hey fellas while on the subject, is there not a USA company that makes 22 magnum "uppers" too?

PS, besides 1911s, the only other semi's I own are 22s, (Ruger Mk 2/Star Model FR) Ruger is bloody accurate and the Star has the same control positions as a 1911.
Cheers...

I just got my Norc 1911 from Marstar last week, it seems to be a nice little unit. Now I need to accessorize it a bit - trigger could be smoother, and I need an extended beavertail thingy on the grip safety - it tends to pinch my hand when the action cycles.

welcome to the clan

Don't curse us embrace us, as you have enter the 1911 zone. A true professional always uses a single action. It is the pinnacle of shooting perfection. Enjoy and I still take out my Beretta 96 once and awhile, as you will. However you will never leave a 1911 after owning one.

I've bought a Springfield Black Stainless Target Loaded a little over a year ago and love it. Having said that TSE's prices on Kimbers are getting me thinking about this year's purchases. Totally agree on the coment on reloading. With the price approaching .50 cents a shot and about 5000 rounds per year -ouch - that's starting to hurt.

Well after this experience I'm going to HAVE to stay out of the AR-15 threads because that's the next thing that's been trying to empty my wallet when I'm not looking. Well, that and a handgun for the missus.

Congrats, Calgary.

I'm a much better shot with my Para SSP than I ever was with my Beretta. I'm not knocking Berettas. They're beautifully made, classic guns. But I just cannot shoot accurately with one. My guess: the grip-trigger distance and the backstrap shape are not for my hand.

For the money, a Para is a very good gun. I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

I concur with what all of you have been saying - I'm a dedicated 1911 fan, and the pics below prove it!

I own two guns from some of the most extreme ends of the fabled 1911 spectrum - an excellent and original condition Colt M1911A1 from 1945 (drop-in Nowlin trigger and Uncle Mike's grips - original parts preserved) and a Dlask SS Custom that I just received very recently. If you want to know more info about them, just look up my postings on them by clicking on THOR74 and then "find more posts by..." etc.

I love the way 1911s are designed, come apart for service and shoot. I love the way they feel in my hand (arched mainspring housings and long triggers required). I'm not into plastic in my guns, at all. I love the way they look. I'm a single action man and I don't have (or like) Series 80 safeties because they complicate the internals and compromise otherwise SuperSweet trigger pulls.

Welcome to the wonderful world of 1911s - we embrace you, brother! :)

Find yourself a reputable local who does remanufactured ammo. Safe and should run more like $300 per 1000 rounds and no taxes. Give your spent brass to your go-to guy (assuming you aren't reloading) and help keep the cost down for all. I use a sharpie & ruler to run a line on each box of 50 so I know I'm picking up my own.

ps Thor74 that Dlask is a pretty girl...

I think you just found your second 1911.....;)

Hey BC Mike - thanks a lot for the compliment - it means a lot :)

About the ammo - I used to have a guy in town who would press me bullets - he had a big progressive machine and all I ever shot for years was his product. I never ever had a single misfire or problem with his bullets. About seven years ago he moved to Australia and now there is no one around. But to others, try to find someone.

Back around 1999-2000, my bullet making connection would only charge me $7.00 per box of 50 .45 230 gr. FMJ and $8.00 per box of 50 .44 Magnum 240 gr. SWC. DAMN!! I wish he was still around!!

Rather amazing that a gun designed before WW1 is still in production, while others have come and gone.
Not only that, but there are different companies producing it.
Mine is a High Standard 1911A1
