After plenty of thought I have decided to take the plunge and have a barrel custom-made for my polytech m14 in 338fed
By Herron Arms along with a 13" barrel for my savage 10 it is not a cheap project's
but 338fed is friggin awesome!

Carverk - What will you have to do to ensure that gas pressure is properly managed?

What bullets are you planning to run...180's?

Pr589 I'm not really too sure hoping my buddy 45ACPKING Will jump in and give me advice
It's going to be for heavy loads it's going to be one serious hunting rifle
I got a week or two before I place the Final order in they never gave me a price just a estimate
I'm sure glad Tom is going to show me how to build this rifle without his help I would never be able to pull this off the barrel is not cheap

Me and Tom have been talking about this project for a while he knows of a couple guys State side that have their m14 chambered 338fed
Will be using their barrels as a guideline

Keep us posted for sure, along with final cost if you're comfortable sharing. I think this would be a solid platform for heavier .308 based rounds.

I don't mind sharing the price
like I said the barrel is quite expensive approximately $800 plus $100 for reamer fees it's not cheap to turn a m14 into a bulldozer
It's a good thing I have a buddy who is a retired M14 mechanic
I knew that this something you hunters would be interested in following this project when I get the barrel hopefully we can start posting some pictures

This project is not just about a M14/338fed
I will be building a NR savage short barreled bolt action rifle with a 13" barrel as a backup rifle
I learned last year well hunting moose you have to have a backup rifle with an m14
There is a video on YouTube that shows a guy hunting with AR chambered in 338fed hunting buffalo one shot kill
Has me thinking about a m14 buffalo hunt LOL
Maybe somebody in Alberta will be willing to take me on a Buffalo hunt this year BIG HINT here haahaa

I saw on the web 2-3 M14 in this caliber. Surprisingly they never did anything to the gas system. If it was mine I'd get a Schuster gas plug from the US. Or try a Sadlak grooved piston with a Socom gas plug.
With a custom barrel, you could have the gas port a little smaller as well...

Good luck. We'll follow your quest with interest.

I will be counting on Tom's expertise On the technical stuff
Going to be a great way to learn more about building a M 14
I just want hard-hitting M14 that I can legally hunt anything in North America
It's not going to be long before Tom spots this thread lol

Hopefully this project will kickstart some of the manufactures into looking into producing barrels of different calibers for our M14 at a more affordable price
It's not like we only own one M14

Tell you what, if you can help me with mine when yours is finished I'll do the leg work on the bison hunt, as there fair game north of where I work, and I've been thinking of doing one myself :) a double bull would be a lot of work but in the end I'm sure it'll worth it.

That would be great I travel up To Alberta all the time for work
It will be my first time hunting in Alberta and the first time hunting buffalo
Maybe I can convince 45ACPKING to come along as well I know he wants to build one in 338fed too
M14 buffalo hunt coming up this year Yahooooo!

Very exciting news and I am sure Thomas will chime in as I remember he wants one in 338 fed as well.

It has been done South of the border as you said but found this article and worth some read:

Me , Tom and Tony the tig welder were discussing this project sitting around the campfire moose hunting last year
There is not really that much not to like about 338fed I rarely take shots over 200 yards most times it is under hundred yards
Plus I wanted to match my M14 to a NR short barrel bolt action rifle as a back up and bush rifle when I say short I mean really short 13" barrel
(I'm going to have one cool hunting combo this year)
The 338fed has great reviews with both rifle and handgun
plus I'm hoping that these two projects might inspire some of our Canadian manufactures to start thinking a little more out-of-the-box

This is could be interesting :)

I'm very excited about these two projects I think a rifles like this needs to not only go through the build but actual hunts with them
After all we're talking two very cool hunting rifles

With some luck maybe somebody will tackle the 260 ore a 7-08 now that would make this thread really interesting
I wouldn't mind tackling the 260rem down the road maybe after my two 338fed projects are finished

Is that 13" right? What use is a 13" rifle? It over the 26"? Just curious.
If you're going to go with a .338 Fed, buy as much brass as you can afford too. The assorted manufacturer's marketing types think nothing of discontinuing stuff with no regard for their existing customers. Be horrific if you spent that huge pile of money on a barrel only to find you can't get ammo or brass.
