Custom built Dlask 1911 Commander in 9mm - pictures & range test

The barrel should last you a long time, so I doubt you'll be replacing it anytime soon. The only thing you need to know is the type of cut used. The barrel you have is a Clark cut. The other type is a Wilson/Nowlin cut. They don't interchange, so if you order a barrel, make sure you get the right cut to fit your frame.

I just don't know if its the case for their 9mm 1911s but i don't like the extractors that Dlask uses in their .45s, very stiff and hard to adjust, I'm sure they'll last a long time once they're properly tensioned however.

Just ordered one today. Yikes! Going to have the front strap checkered and adjustable Novaks. I'll post some pics when it's ready. He said I'd have it before Christmas. How am I going to sleep at night waiting!

Can I ask how much you're paying? I called them to get a complete frame only since I had the top end and I was quoted $1000-$1200 for the frame only.

I am now thinking this was a misunderstanding.

PS Send me a PM if you're uncomfortable saying in public.

Kinda pricy

The price was mentioned so I had to comment on it. Seems a bit high for the total package. Frame and slide are Chi-com right? Is the barrel Chi-com too?
Seems to me that I have heard this somewhere before, right Beemer?
Buy an inexpensive Chi-com copy and dump a pile of cash into to make it work. Why not just get a factory custom gun from the guys at Springfield, or Kimber, or STI. They are all in the same price range as you quoted...

his frames are European and his slides are American I believe, if not in house manufactured now (frames are raw and machined in house).

Terry, what weight is the recoil spring you use in your Commander? I am still having slight problems with my custom Colt 9mm. Regards, Richard:D

I have the Trojan in 9MM. If you are having problems with the slide not locking back after the last round is fired, a common concern with the 1911 in 9MM, there are two issues to deal with.

First the mags. Often the little foot in the follower slips over the slide stop. If the followers in your mags are metal, GENTLY bend the foot towards the closest side of the mag tube. Be careful as it is esy to break the follower. If that does not cure the problem go to a 10# spring. My Trojan came with a 14# spring and it simply was to heavy for the gun to operate fully. I am using lighter loads in my gun PF 130ish. If you are running hotter loads try a 11# or 12# spring.

Hope this helps.

Take Care

Bob

I'm pretty sure Dlask makes their own frame and slides. One of the machinists came up to the front counter yesterday holding what appeared to be a slide in it's early stages of life. It was literatly a block of metal he was machining into a slide. I asked Joe if that was a slide and he nodded and smiled.

This is good to hear. Maybe he'll put these 9mm commanders into production and the price will go down.:D

9mm

Wow nice looking 1911. Thanks for posting the great photos, nice job, but now I think I need one ! A double stack 40cal.
I liked the ramped barrel, isn't the idea of a ramped barrel so that it will function well with all types of ammo?

Good for you man nice looking 1911 for a great price!

Actually I have no idea what the tension of the recoil spring is in my pistol. How do I measure it?

I don't know where Joe Dlask gets his frames. He buys raw forging of slides from Europe, and machine them in his workshop. But he bought my slide from the U.S. because of the rare longer 9mm breach face.

Never handled a Dlask gun, huh? 'Cause that isn't even close. While Kimbers (even with MIM parts) are nice, as are the factory customs - they certainly aren't what you'd get from Jo, the closest 'production custom' would be more along the lines of Nighthawk, and even then probably not quite. Dlask is an expert with the 1911, like any other custom 'smith who has spent 25+ years making a living working on 1911's. Factory work does not compare. No, I don't work for Dlask, or own one of his pistols (yet) but I have handled quite a few (6 or 8) and they are very different from factory guns.

I looked at the Dlask again; I compared it to my custom Colt 1911A1 9mm and the work on mine is not equivalent to the work on the Dlask. My pistol was done by a gunsmith in the Detroit area and the Dlask wins hands down! I gave my friend $1,000 (US) for mine, the friend had spent $2500 (US) on it, including the pistol, when he gave up. I like my friend but I hope the Detroit area gunsmith kissed him first. The fact is I would rather have the Dlask. Regards, Richard:D
