Custom Hollow Points

Am I missing something with the above post? How can shooting lighter bullet with a charge made for heavier bullets be bad, since a heavier bullet will use a lighter charge of "x" powder than the lighter bullet.

No you're right. Sounds like a few people need some reloading literature. Experimenting can be fun until you leave the "cup" part in the barrel.
 
Yes, core seperation would be bad if it was not caught before the next shot. This dangerous situation is addressed by inspecting the barrel between shots but I prefer to shoot more, inspect less.
 
While I admire your curiosity and ingenuity, you need to be careful when handloading in general and more so when working up loads or trying new things. It is not enough to get lucky, so don't assume because it worked once it will work again. Experiment at your own risk, but the smart money is on the manuals and the wisdom of others who are willing to share from their experience. Good luck to you.
 
You could try casting your own in a Hollow Point mold. .45 ACP bullet lost 4 grn from before to after and mushroomed to .820" from .452".

5 grn of Unique at 10 yards into phone book. Can't get any better than that.

Very impressive, and a very light load too. What kind of alloy is that? Which mold is that? And are they 1911 friendly?

just so every one knows this is a strictly 1 shot at a time deal with full inspection each time. just messing with different designs to see what works and what doesn't. i can't say for sure but i think the worst thing that could happen is the lead melts and flies through the barrel leaving the copper jacket inside the barrel.

but i do appreciate all the concerns and for pointing some things out that i didn't think about, hence my starting the thread.

so i decided to give it a shot, and well shot the bullet. there was a good deal less recoil, so i must of lost a bit of powder, as well the bullet is lighter. i had no issues with it, and it made a clean cut into the paper.

Paper? Well of course it made a hole in paper! You're supposed to shoot a pumpkin or something exciting with it!

Paper.....*sigh*.......

Much more friction with copper jackets than a lead slug, that's why the lead core would get squirted out the middle. If bullet manufactures didn't have to put bases on the jacketed hollow points they wouldn't, it would save them $ Unless the lead is bonded in some way to the jacket, there is only friction keeping it in place.

correct, 2 of the 45's i cut the copper jacket came off. so i took one of the caps and jammed it into the hollow point to see what happens.
 
You're lucky you lost a lot of powder while pulling it. trying to use the factory powder charge on a bullet that weighed 60 grs less is just asking for disaster

Why? Lighter bullet means less pressure with the same powder charge. Not dangerous at all. A HEAVIER bullet could be dangerous.
