Custom Hunting Rifle

Custom rifles are great, especially if you cannot find what you are looking for in a factory rifle. Just be prepared for the cost and the delivery time. If you are prepared for this, it can be a rewarding experience!

Have you looked at some of the premium firearms available from the boutique rifle shops? Quite often you can get what you are looking for for less than what a gunsmith is going to charge for a custom build. (Proof, Fierce, Alterra, Christesen, etc.)

When it comes to the stocks you are mentioning; have you handled, shouldered, carried or shot a rifle in any of these stocks?
Suggest doing so before buying or building on these platforms, as you may find that they do not feel as good to you, as to those who have written about them. It may mitigate buyer's remorse, if you've not handled a chassis rifle at all. If you have, great! You know what to expect. (Just see a lot of these for sale and wonder why...

In the end, just be prepared that custom does not necessarily equal accuracy, as no two rifles will shoot the same bullet or ammunition to the same degree of accuracy.
That being said, quality components, assembled by a good gunsmith using best practices, should net you a firearm capable of good or better accuracy.

All but one of my custom and semi-custom rifles over the past 25 years have been built by Rocky Mountain Rifles (Corlane Sporting Goods in Dawson Creek). Greg and his team do a great job, and he will take the time to discuss your project with you.

I bought all my parts and brought to EM Precision to put together. They don't recommend this, and it cost me more in the end than if I had just got them to order the parts, but I wanted to be able to buy it piece by piece as I was saving. Some of the bigger name shops would rather you buy from them so they know you're getting what they trust, so they charge more for putting together a rifle with parts that aren't theirs.

I got lucky finding the exact barrel I wanted that was in stock, finding a left hand action in stock, and ordered the stock from a dealer, which was super simple. I had some knowledge on all the parts and chose very high quality and well known manufacturers. Even though they don't usually take on those types of jobs, they still did it and even offered their same accuracy guarantee, which is also something they don't usually do if it isn't their parts. I believe it was because I brought them well known brands that had a very small likelihood of under performing.

I'd say if you are comfortable with your knowledge of manufacturers and parts, it isn't too big of a deal, although likely more expensive. If you aren't, use all the help that the gunsmith will provide and go with their recommendations.

Where does one start on doing a custom build ? I have a pretty good idea of the components that I want to use. Is it more of a matter of finding a really good gunsmith to assemble the rifle components ? Some of it’s a bit to technical for me but, I am sure a gunsmith can help with those questions or I can ask here 😆 😎 How difficult is it buying gun components out of the states , if I can’t find them in Canada ?
You start with a budget, an action and cartridge type/bullet type as you implied. Picture your dream rifle. Write down what you want then start to look into the costs and availability of the components.
Precision Optics has some builds ready to go for reference or purchase.
But the bottom line is what your willing to pay for the project.

KS Arms Barrel and Action..cerakoted
Fluted Heavy Barrel (1:8 twist or faster)
20 MOA Picatinny rail
MDT CRBN rifle stock
MDT Bottom metal hunting
MDT Comp Brake
Adjustable single stage trigger...2lbs
Handloaded Barnes LRX 127gr bullets
CHAMBERD IN 6.5 PRC

So, after many a hours searching and researching lol I was going to chamber it in 300 WM but, I already have a Sako chambered in that. So i figured 6.5 PRC would be a nice addition. Figured the above components would make exactly what i am looking for.

You wont be disappointed with that setup. Which KS action you go with? A SAR or Wolverine?
