7x57R would be cool as it's not already available in the #1s. Easy to load with 7x57 dies. Wolverine has Norma brass $75/100.
 
7x57R brass is of equal strength to standard 7x57, loaded to the same pressure, however only the 7x57R can be made to work in this action due to rim diameters.

.318 et al, I have my limits when it comes to niche chamberings I'm afraid. :p Need to be able to buy brass and bullets off the shelf for anything I chamber. Just too much expense and time with the truly niche stuff for my tastes, though certainly historically interesting.
 
Well in that case I really can't see a better option than the .300 H&H.

Nice choice for a nice rifle! Different enough to add some cool to the project, but still a very effective cartridge that's easy to load for.

Now you're going to have to find some heavy round nose bullets for the full Fudd vs dinosaur effect. :)

I like it, solidly a Fudd myself, pushing the globalization of Fuddism. 7x57R will just suit this little No.1 right, another concern I had with the .300 H&H and the long barrel was the larger fore end required to make it look "right". I want to keep it slim and trim, especially given how sleek the No.1 is to start with and wishing to run with that, and the fore end shape I have in mind (a slim, slightly tapered No.1A style with no Alex Henry cut). As I want a takedown with this, a short 20" stainless carbine suits a takedown better than a long .300 as well.

The 12 sided / dodecagon blank I have is just icing on the cake, I laid it alongside the stocked action and it was "it".
 
Angus... 7X57R is an excellent, classy and functional choice. That will be a beautiful piece that is also serviceable anywhere on this "spinning ball." Looking forward to the "completed project" pics...
