Custom SKS, AK influences.

Being original and creative often brings out the negativity in those who lack the vision and ability to build their dreams .

There is No short supply of SKS's to worry about so build and enjoy your special , one of a kind rifle .

I think your doing a great job !!

More over you have been completely honest on your build , including what is working well and what still needs perfecting , Hat's off to you !!!!!

I'm actually in the process of an SKS bubba job myself, so I'm not deadset against modifying perfectly fine milsurps. What bugs me is when I see a rifle that has been made to be less functional, and less accurate. I'm not even referring to the original poster as his rifle may in fact be very nice. My comments were more general.

I can take some more photos of the trigger setup. At this time it has been functioning flawlessly with the blanks I made up. I just drilled out a 7.62x39 casing to accept 209 primers. Some concerns that were brought to my attention about the AR trigger is that the material I removed from the hammer may weaken it to the point that it snaps off with repeated use, I hope this doesn't happen, I may add some weld to the back side to attempt to retain some strength. I will take some photos to more clearly show what I am referring to. I appreciate all the feedback, positive or negative. Any potential safety concerns are welcome.

I am not a gunsmith, and I don't pretend to know what I am doing, I just went all in to make what I want. At the end of the day if it doesn't work I can return it to stock and move on.

Thanks

The haters gonna hate Ahahaha. Just because they only have enough imagination to throw an ati or arch angel stock on their $180 surplus rifle. Don't hate on the guy that doesn't want his sks to look like every other weekend warrior's out there.

I agree that a Bubba job must be done with Safety in mind at all times , so any mods never endanger the shooter or anyone else when in operation or other wise .

I also agree that certain rare and historical fire arms should be preserved if in original state as many were lost through time , wars and the countless fire arm amnesty's here and in other countries that have destroyed vast amount of rare and historical fire arms , now which will never be seen again, perhaps only some examples can now be found only in some museums or private collections , sad but true .

That is why we should encourage fellow CGNers to post here and show and explain what they have or are doing when doing a Bubba , even ask for ideas to improve their projects and keep everyone safe at the same time .

No offence intended , no offence taken !!!

This is great! I applaud your vision and the courage to go for it and make it happen! Don't lose heart.

As one who is attempting something very similar myself- albeit for different reasons, i can tell you that without an operational hammer spring or safety, you are farther from your goal than you know. You may be glad you kept the original trigger if you hit enough dead ends with this one.

On a positive note, doesn't the rifle feel much better balanced now? For manipulating with the pistol grip, that is? I moved my pistol grip forward too and it makes a world of difference.

Keep in mind that the original safety lever performs a vital secondary function - it locks the trigger group into the rifle when it is firing. Remember how you can't remove the trigger group unless the safety is on? That's a feature. Without that latch locking the TG onto your reciever, you may find that the TG pops loose under full recoil impulse. You will need to find a way to duplicate that functionality, even if you decide to leave the safety lever off the trigger group

Thankyou for your input, I am planing on a safety as well as something to lock the trigger group in. As for the mag release that is really a neat setup but i am interested in the stock AK look.

Also the hammer spring issue has been solved.

Here are a few pictures of the trigger setup. The AR trigger had to be cut down to fit between the bars for the SKS trigger, I have the measurements on them, but if anyone is interested in trying this I would recommend taking your own measurements in case of variances. As you can see the Hammer Spring needed some pretty ugly shaping done to it, I am hoping it holds up. One issue i encountered was the spring was pressing on the trigger half of the sear and causing problems, I bent the spring and it seems to have solved this issue. Still lots left to do.

Thanks

I think that is an awesome job! There will always be people who have nothing good to say about a project. Im going to chop one up and make an mp-44 look-alike! Guess how that will go over!

I wanted my SKS to look like an AK so I bought a Vz58 :)

LOL, me too...

I've been thinking of converting my SKS for a long time as it's be a fun project. I even got a few AK mags and a grip, and I think I have a mag release lever somewhere. I've just been too lazy to get started.

I am impressed with your trigger group so far. All the AK modded SKS's have too large a gap between the rigger and mag. You've closed the gap nicely.

An idea for a different approach that I had; mount another trigger on it's own pivot in front of the stock trigger, and trim the stock trigger to a pivot lever and hide this in a specially modded grip that will sit forward, using a connecting rod between the two triggers (that you could curve in a way to hide it as much as possible). This way you will be able to use the complete SKS trigger group internals... if any of that makes sense... I can see it working in my head, like a bullpup setup in a way.

You'd still need a safety... or not

And just source an AK trigger guard with built in mag release. It's a relatively easy surplus part to get:

I had the same idea for the trigger setup but after looking at it I felt it would never feel as crisp as I wanted and would be alittle sloppy therefore I looked at the AR trigger and figured I would go for it.

As for that trigger guard. I was looking for that or any source for ak parts in Canada. The few I did find were not in stock and the prices were insane.

Thanks for the input!
