Just a quick questions on here I currently have a Bush Master 16" ar and am looking to get a 10.5 upper. I was considering just having my upper cut down to 10.5 but I have been told that till will affect the funtioning of the rifle and will never be able to get it to work right. If this is true then why will a 10.5 upper be any different considering it would just use the same carbine gas tube?

Anyone have some information on this or anyone done this and had results?

Thanks

If your gunsmith knows ARs, and has the data to do the job correctly, you will be fine. There are a number of shops across the country that can correctly modify your AR to be anything you want it to be. If you post where you live I'm sure members can point you in the right direction.

There are issues with the gas works when you cut down an AR15 barrel to 10.5 inches. But as Dangertree pointed out, there are plenty of competent smiths around who have done this kind of work before and know how to do it right.

I did one 3 week ago, but it was cut down to 12 inchs from 16inchs heavy barrel, you would have to open up the gas hold on the barrel to the front site block to allow more gas to cycle the bolt. also thread the barrel to 1/2-28TPI for one of the Surefire muzzle break. look similar to this one!

I was thinking of getting cut to 10.5 and putting a vortex on there... i posted on the EE tho id rather just buy an upper and sell mine to avoid complications but i am going to tlk to a smith thanks

10.5 inch should be ok, I used to have a bushmaster 10inchs machine gun barrel, I did had a lot of jamming problem since the barrel was short, but after the gas hold enlarge on the barrel, it cycle fine with out a hitch, but the nose on those thing are not pleasant at all, I rather prefer the 16inchs and 20inchs...
This was Friday ar10T, my latest project in cutting down part of the barrel to accommodate muzzle break.

That is pretty awesome looking. And I am a huge fan on the extra noise! I am trying to go to a very short upper and then get a 20 inch T upper so I have the best of both worlds rather than the intermediate length upper thats a little too long for an entry weapon and not quite accurate enough for a highpower scope or bi pod.

It shoot very nice at the moment, for a heavy gun like the Ar10T to have a same recoil or less than 223 is quite amazing, as the hammer go, there is slight jerk and I could see the bullet going down range to the target, and with my 20inchs barrel ar15, it went quite well with 77 and 80grain BTHP. out to 500meter at the moment!
