Anyone cut down a Mosin 91/30 to a shorter length? I'm wanting to do it at home to save $. I friend says he seen it on here and the poster even used the original stock

Do that and the ghost of Sergei Ivanovitch Mosin will haunt your dreams !!

Why cut down a 91/30 when you can buy an M44 ??

I hunt with my Mosin and have no difficulty with the length.

They was I look at it is the price of an m38 or m44 is upwards around $400. I already have a scout scope mount that needs me to drill a couple holes in the receiver. Which is a permanent mod already.

I just cut my buddies mosin down to 19 inch. There are a tone of mosin out there you wont be ruining anything. Mosins are not special or rare.

I cut mine down to 18.75" using my lathe and then re crowned on the lathe. Put it in a wooden Monte Carlo stock and pillar bedded it. Accuracy weight and balance all improved dramatically.

Important question; Why?

Cutting can be done, but the cut must be perfectly square to the bore and recrowned or accuracy will suffer. I understand the wanting to save money and do it at home, but if you mess up you've destroyed a $200 rifle. I've seen a purposely angle-cut muzzle break cause the shooter headaches with flyers. If you have a lathe, go for it. Without one, I'd say leave it.

How did you cut it mattcwc? I don't have access to a lathe and was thinking worst case scenario would be to thread the barrel and but a muzzle break on.
Why?? It's a cheapo rifle that i got a good deal on and if I screw up I'll sell the parts on ee scrap the rest and be out like $50. At lease this way I guy can actually use the rifle and not have to deal with a 4 foot gun.

Got mine cut down.
Cut back the stock and recapped it to use the original metal etc.
Barrel is now at around 21" so a little longer than a M38
At the time M38/M44 were going for near $450!! F**k that.
I'll post a pic up soon. Problems you will run into that you haven't taken into account are finding a new barrel band to make a tight fit at the new location required.
And remounting a front sight block/base.
Can be remedied with a little know-how, access to decent machinery and a friend who's good with a welder/torch.

It's your rifle and your money... Go for it I say. Don't forget to post some pictures. It will wow us if it turns out amazing and if it doesn't turn out so good, we will all share in a good laugh.

It's not hard you don't need a lathe. It's called hack saw, files, tape. Brass screw for the crown and some valve lapping compound. It's not hard to get it square to the bore.

If everyone had the mindset that they can hack a rifle because they are currently cheap and plentiful, the unmolested supply would urgently disappear.
We should be thankful the the Bubba gun owner rate is 3/10 ! Lol!

f:P:
Just wrap a piece of tape around the barrel, if the tape is even then its squre. And i have a tiny machinest squre. I'm not looking for percision nasa perfect here. Its squre.
It not rocket science it's just 90deg.
I've done this to two of my sks's and i get 1.5 inch groups at 100y.
I don't know why this is so hard for some of you to grasp.

Their is plenty of it, lets sporter it ! that remember me the story of the lee enfield ! and now we are all saying Who is the Re..rd who did that ?!?! no problem they were 25$ 40 years ago and now it worth 600$ a pieces , Please don t do the same mistake :)
