CVA Scout followed me home

Yeah, wasn't prepared for that whole "I gotta get more of these" feeling. Theres a lot of chamberings lol

It's so good. I really like mine. I don't know if I would have chosen it over the Cascade XT which is available in .35 Whelen for 2025 but I've always wanted to try one (imported through IRG mid-'21) and now that I have one, I wouldn't mind another one. Or two.

That does sound pretty wicked!

Snag a Cascade ;)

You bet! Soon as I get a Barnes 275gr load figured out, its gonna be a freezer filler! Gotta score some dies and either H110 or Lil'Gun

While I did sport the 444 marlin the year before, I really liked the V2 scout model. Wanted to get the 44 mag model as I upgraded the 444 to a ruger #1 in the 450BM, but ended up with a 12" barrel 44 mag instead as my sxs rifle.

Try the 250gr or the 295gr barnes TEZ muzzle loader tips if you are after game. I use the 295gr for moose and elk going 2265 fps. Many use the 250gr for deer size.

Load mine with lil gun.

Oh no kidding? Thanks, will take you up on that suggestion. I was going to try the 275gr TSX but will snag some of these two.

If Lil' Gun works for you, that'd be a good place to start too. Already have H110 on hand for a 300 BLK so either of those will fit right in.

How've the 44s been? You too byrbenn, have you guys hunted them much? Any particular hunting loads you're fond of?

The V2 forend looks nicer tbh

I haven't hunted with mine. Just loaded some rounds up real quick. Used h110 and loaded 50 rounds with 240gr xtp and they shot as good as I can with a red dot. I'm getting perfect expansion and they'll end up in the 5th gallon water jug if I recall.
I'm not sure why I bought it to be honest. I decided I wanted to hunt bear over hounds in Maine with a handgun then the freeze came and killed the dream. Still loved the 44mag I guess.
The scout v2 is a sweet Lil gun I admit. I'll likely add it to the list of bear over bait cartridges. Once I get a good optic on it I'll really get it dialed in. As of now I can hit clay targets at 100 yards off hand with ease and make ragged holes at 25 yards. The dot is 4moa I believe

That sounds awesome.

I haven't really hunted with the 44 yet. I had one out the year before for bear, but didn't end up taking the one I saw at the time. One of those, why didn't I just do it, moments that you can't change after the fact.

It is now a take along when I go for rides as it is really short. No problems with the peep sight out to 100m. I use the 240 XTP for it, as there are really no great bullets for the 44. Another reason why I was okay with moving from the 444. Only factory 265gr available, and you can no longer get the tips for them.

The 450BM has a better selection of reloading supplies. In fact I even tried the .458" (45-70) copper tips for it, sized down in 3 progressive steps. Got the 20 pack for experimental use, and had a great time. Nice groupings as well, so it push came to shove they are also an option. Used the Lee sizer dies with plenty of lube, and ran them through a few times in each one. I don't know it I would try the cup n core, but the copper solids worked fine.

I have a 92 16” 44mag. Ftx separation rate is high, pieces are big and continue penetrating. I’ve had hydraulic blowback on entrance wounds, with deer hair “blown” off around the hole.

240 grain are the only xtp’s I’ve tried. All have exited from what I recall.

Dead runs are within eye sight with either bullet on average bears or whitetail inside 50yards.

so pretty much what I'm seeing with a 270 or any other cartridge of the like haha. At least how fast they die and how far they go.

Nice!

I figure the 44 mag is the equivalent to my 50 cal muzzleloader as I use a 250gr aerolite powerbelt at 1700fps. I'd hunt all north America with that. Used the same way I can't see how the Lil 44mag couldn't do the same. I also bought some 300gr xtps but haven't tried them yet
Kentucky windage or Kentucky ballistics can't recall the exact yiutuber tested the xtp line from 180gr to 300gr in various barrel lengths in gel. Quite interesting results.

I have a single shot somewhere on my wish list.
Rugers and Sharps are out there in dreamland pricing but this could be doable. I'd love to be able to add a peep site to something like that.

Yea, once you try one, they seem to have a special place in the cabinet, and in the field. I practice at the range with a quick reload shooting succession and that paid off last fall. Had to put 2 quick ones into an elk with a 3rd follow up shortly after to secure the kill and save some packing out. Don't listen to anyone that says they are too long to get successive shots off with being a single shot. Not really any longer than a bolt rifle, if you practice with it ahead of time.

My new 45-70 Scout grouped well when I finally found my impacts at 100m last weekend (2 feet low!!!), while initially intending to zero my scope.

Less than 1" group from a bag (two in the same hole barely registering as two, three others touching looking like only two), but I was pressed for closing time and didn't give it my best effort after wasting an entire box looking for holes.

Before I go back to zero it properly, I'll have to take some time to check if the base may uneven (only thing I didn't check), because I don't think I have enough adjustment to get it to point of aim at 100m. I was using S&B 405gr, so maybe I'll gain an inch or two with faster 300gr cartridges.

Shot enough game having to load a bolt rifle from a pocket to know that without having the single shot. They surprise ya sometimes lol

Dan I hope you get yours sighted!!

I have a Traditions G3 Outfitter in 44RM. It sports a Leupold VX-3i 1.5-5. I shoot 265gr Hornady FPs and FTX pretty much exclusively as I want to be able to count on this cartridge out to 150yds and I don’t believe that the typical 44RM pistol bullets can be relied on at that distance. On the other hand I don’t believe that a 240gr pistol bullet designed for 1200fps expansion will hold together at close distance reliably when fired at 1700+ fps in a 20” barrel

My rifle has quite a long throat, which allows me to seat the Hornady bullets out about .100”, and gives me more powder capacity. So I design my loads for a muzzle velocity of 1850-1900fps using Hornady’s 265s, giving me an honest 125yd zero with velocity at 150yds that falls within Hornady’s design specs for expansion.

And all that said the rifle is short, light, and 1.5MOA accurate. It’s been a really practical, accurate, light weight and fun rifle to own and shoot. I am a fan and can recommend the utilitarian single shot rifles.

Im hoping a 300 blk will turn up

I thought I read that there were going to be Bergara versions of these soon too.

But the stainless take-down is pretty sweet with that heavy fluted barrel.

A 16” 308 or 300 Blk with subs would suit many of the shots I end up with WT hunting perfectly

Pics of groups from my new CVA 45/70 takedown. 350 gr Campro. Imr 4198 30,30.5,31.5. I’ve shot Rem. 405 gr and hornady 325 gr factory and they all group about the same. Going to load up some stouter charges of 4198 and 350 gr hornady for a bear load.
Pretty pleased so far.
