Hi!

I'm in the market for a precision riflen in .308 caliber at the moment.
I took the CZ 550 Varmint Laminated and the Remington 700 Varmint Laminated Stock into consideration.
They can be seen at CZ (http://www.cz-usa.com/01.detail.php?id=21) and the Remington at (http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_700/model_700_VLS.asp).

Have any of you tried these rifles? Which one would be the better quality gun. I am aware that there are more aftermarket parts for the 700 and I am not quite convinced of the scope mounting system of the CZ either.

Feedback would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Carl

I may be biased as I own 2 Rem 700 varmint rifles, but I would go with the Remington, based soley on the scope mount on the CZ, I think you will be very limited in the types of tactical rails you can get to allow you to securely mount a serious scope. The aftermarket limitations are also a big issue, there was no info on the twist of the CZ either.

Are you going to compete with this platform ? I'm assuming that you are planning on shooting many, many bulelts through this unit ... :)

I love the workmanship of the CZ since I've got a CZ452 Varmint for practicing my technique. My wife loves it too.

Now, for serious competition at the prov and natn'l level I'm sticking with our Remmy M700's and Winnie Stealth II. I just cannot recall ever finding / seeing / witnessing a CZ Hvy barrel precision rig at the ORA or DCRA NSCC Sniper matches. Maybe you could enlighten me and bring a CZ to the sniper matches and school me. :D I've seen so many Win M70's and Rem M700's endure the year in and year out routine of known distance competition so I feel confident sticking with them. And I'm still unsure of other brands like Tikka (owned one for deer hunting) or SAKO (loved my .223 groundhog gitter). I know of a Steyr that is just fabulous and still keeps on going year after year.

Hope this helps,
Barney

Thanks guys, that helps quite a bit.
I won't be competing but doing lots of personal target shooting. I'll definately be putting lots of rounds through it. I'll probably go for the Remmy just becuase of the scope mount options.

If you get a good Remington, it'll be very good, unfortunately there are occasionally some quality control issues.
The CZs are basicly Mauser 98s and they really don't get much better than that.

But do you really need or want the attributes of the Mauser design for a tactical rifle? IMHO they're better suited for hunting rifles. Plus with the
Remington you have a whack of bolt on and gunsmith options. Mind you, I bought a Savage so I don't have a stake in either. I'd still go with one of teh more common push feeds for a tactical rig and leae the Mausers to the hunters.

The CZs are well built rifles to say the least, they can generate outstanding accuracy, there is an option for scope rails, me, I make 1 that goes onto the action, but you need to drill and tap the action to secure it in place, like any American rifle. The triggers are a little different and even the 2 stage set are not as crisp as an aftermarket trigger for the Remington, lock time is also slower than the 700s. The Remington would still be my choice for target or tactical use. The CZ would hands down be my choice for a hunting rifle, especially for dangerous game.

What kind of scope rail? A cross-slotted one for weaver-type rings or something along the lines of a leupold scope mount. One-piece or two-piece? And how much $$$ would that set me back?
