CZ 858...Is it worth the extra $$$ over the SKS.

My next question is:

Since the CZ is a step up from the SKS(majority opinion), then am I just better off spending a extra $150 and get a Ruger Mini-30? The Ruger even has a sturdy scope mount built into the reciever, and includes the rings. So really if you figure in the price it costs to scope a CZ, they are practically the same price. The Ruger is a very well built and modern gun, and now they even have the high capacity magazines for them also, although we can't use them unless they are pinned.

The Ruger Mini-30 is built really well, and has stainless steel barrel and come with very nice ghost ring sights. The ruger has come along way since they were first introduced over 30 years ago, and today they are very accurate, reliable guns. Something like 5-6 guys in my Hunting group use a Ruger Mini-30 for Deer, and they swear by them, for there accuracy and dependability.

I think that if the Ruger was introduced today, now that all of the bugs have been worked out of them, they would probably be one of the most sought after rifles on the market. Just my 2 cents.

What do you guys think $240 SKS.......$700 CZ........$850 Ruger Mini-30???????
 
I notice that these VZ type rifles are getting quite popular south of the border, and that there are write-ups praising them in the tactical/blacktical gun rags.

I would say, Blueflash, that you should invest in the CZ, shoot it, play with it, and if you don't like it, proceed with the advice here and sell it on the EE, where some other member can quickly relieve you of it. I like the SKS, but it's not something I would consider an investment, but rather an inexpensive gun that doesn't get hurt when beaten up. An SKS is like an oversized 10/22, good for plinking, some limited hunting, and shooting cheap ammo. That's not knocking them either, as I have one that I've enjoyed for years.
 
I agree try out the CZ, if you dont like it sell it on the EE in 5 minutes.
Or go straight to the ruger, its up to you and your budget, the pressed steel doesnt impress me, but if it works hey.
 
I'm a bit of a purest and prefer the SKS, but the modern day machining of the CZ makes for a more accurate rifle and shooter, and in fact all the CZ products are quite well made.

Having that said, it depends what kind of shooting you're into. I go hunting with my rifles and I like the wood feel of the SKS and its fast aiming. I dumped my 858 after a few months, it was too plastic of a feeling for me. I'm not into the tactical shooting anymore, I had enough of that in the Military.

The receivers are machined...not stamped (CZ).

The Ruger might be easier to scope (as purchased), but with the addition of new products by product developers like NEA, Neit, that weakness, has almost been nullified.

SKS: Good, cheap, reliable, fairly easy to clean, (mine) horrible trigger out of the box
CZ: Accurate, detachable mags, dead easy to clean, holds it value, easily configurable to your needs, decent trigger
Ruger: I have heard it is difficult to clean, most expensive, easiest to scope

My vote goes to the CZ. :)...but buy an SKS too, if you can afford it.
 
If its a rifle that you are wanting to shoot cheap surplus 7.62x39 ammo out of accurately then buy the CZ 527 bolt. Super accurate and can shoot cheap ammo all day long and a heck of a hunting rifle.
 
The CZ is a better rifle in all aspects.

Now don't get me wrong I'm not hating on the SKS. I have both the SKS and the 858 and I love both rifles. I will never sell either one. But when my feet are against the fire, when it's time to go compete, hunt, or camp, I walk out the door CZ-858 in hand.

The vz58 design is lighter by far, more comfortable to carry and point, has more field resilient furniture, fewer moving parts, etc.

Tapco Stock - $100
Mags - $60 (Fabsports has plastic Tapco's for $30)

And mine is a tack driver! Shot a 1 inch group with Irons at 50m yesterday! That is the best Ive ever done with irons with any gun I've owned!

CZ-858 is to vzor 58

as

Kimber CustomII is to Colt model 1911

or as

Remington R-15 is to AR-15

CZ-858s, CZH2003s, etc are rifles based on the Czech samopal ( abbreviated:"sa." translates to "submachinegun") vzor (abbreviated:"vz." translates to "model") of 1958.

Ergo a CZ-858 is a vz. 58 but a vz. 58 is not necessarily a CZ-858.

Edit: ala mlehtovaara: Many people are confused because Marstar used an improper designation when marketing the CZH2003. It was marketed as the "vz58s" when they were actually selling CZH2003 sport rifles.

Well the VZ58 the question was referring to would be the CZH2003 that you are referring to anyways, so my original explanation still stands!
 
I sold all of my SKS's except one and I'll be buying another CZ. I already have one, and its awesome. I want a second one to get Rauch to anti-rust treat. They are a lovely, accurate gun and nothing like an SKS.
 
CZ 858 by a long shot. SKS is no longer in my inventory. I found that i would get powder blowback in my face from the gap in the back of the upper reciever from the SKS
( maybe it was just mine?). Wear shooting glasses if you purchase an SKS. Top loading semis with stripper clips suck. My 2cents.

Not totally correct. Marstar also had the Vz58L which was non-restricted with a chrome lined barrel.

The main differencers are:
CZ 858-2 (non-restricted non-chrome lined barrel) 858-4 (restricted chrome lined barrel) New production by CZ using some mil-surp parts. New receivers with no full auto option

Vz58s (restricted) Vz58L (non-restricted) Both have chrome lined barrels. Made by CZH (CZ Hermex)as the CZH 2003 using mi-sup parts. Receiver was re-engineered to block off full auto.

I really want to know if the CZ 858 is more accurate that the SKS?, is it more reliable?, or is the main reason that most guys buy the CZ 858 just because it looks similar to the AK 47, and is scary cool looking? I am really having a hard time to justify buying 1 CZ 858 over 3 SKS rifles. I have owned a 1950 Russian SKS, that I sold (regreting it now) because it was'nt Chrome lined barrel, and I wanted a Chrome Lined barrel model so I could bubbafy and turn into a practical shooter, and Deer hunter.

You might want to find a Vz52/57 then for hunting.
 
They are very different firearms from very different eras with different logistical choices and different tactical manners. This is why they are both interesting in their own way.
I like both.
