CZ 858 or Mini 14

More Minis have been made than VZs, and more rounds fired through them

Seeing how the vz58 came out in the 50s for use by an army, and is still being used in a military role, it seems doubtful that the mini14 had more rifles made with more rounds fired. Maybe more rifles made, but more rounds fired seems unlikely. It's all speculation anyways, I can't find any hard numbers for either firearm.

TDC, most likely all the rifle will ever see is a range, gophers, and beer cans. One can only hope it would never see use for self-defence, hunting, the zombie apocalypse, or an SHTF event like the collapse of civil order - but if it came to that, looking for something that can withstand adverse conditions for a long time. So, durability and reliability is key with accuracy an important element. Will probably get scoped for plinking amusement, and not break the piggy bank for recreational shooting in the meantime (and if it's non-restricted, I can take it out places with far less hassles). Hope that answers your question on intended use.

From everything I've read, both guns appear to hit these requirements hence the request for opinions and thoughts. I currently do not intend to purchase both, but am definitely interested in firing both to help make a decision for a long-term investment.

Hi,

Looking at making a purchase for a reliable and decently accurate semi-auto non-restricted rifle, preferably under $1K. Currently am considering either the CZ-858 or the Mini-14 with the potential to tac it up eventually. Intent is to go plinking, not looking for sub MOA accuracy... thoughts? Which would you choose, and why?

Thanks in advance.

A Mini-14, with a crate of Norinco yellow box, would serve you well.

If you want to make it a little bit black later on, just add an Ultimak rail, with a Vortex Sparc, and a Butler Creek or Choate folding stock.

True on the 858 and scopes. The 858 mount currently sold by Corwin-Arms might be decent though.

They're pretty solid mounts actually. If they're good enough for the Czech military, they'll be more than adequate for the average cgn'er to plink with. Corwin also sells short scopes that work well with the rifle.

why you put a scope in a 223 rifle ??? maybe is better to buy glasses ? an after all, is not a accurate rifle......so !

go with cz 858, mini is not more accurate

many magazine. , reliable, very light, cheapest

don' t buy a mini is a junior rifle, buy a real m305 for more fun, and again is cheap...

don' t buy a mini is a junior rifle...

It's also a SENIOR's rifle and is great for those of us appproaching, or already on, the wrong side of 60.

Which would you rather be shooting at 70 or 80? Better question: which would you be capable of accurately shooting at those ages? A Mini 14 or an M305?

if you want, it could be for senior, why not, but a cz 858 is better for a senior ,,very more reliable , light, and easy to clean :) i would like to see a old man with this gun

come on , mini is just goofy rifle,,,too expensive, etc.......

red is bettter this time....

Point I had forgot to mention, which I came to pondering this, this morning.

For those saying the safety of the Mini and M14 is dangerous, and you have to have your finger in the trigger guard to use it, you're right on one count. Your trigger finger does have to be in the trigger guard, ready to fire, when you're ready to fire. That seems pretty common sense to me and, well, sensible. To engage / put on the safety, your trigger finger is removed from the trigger guard and it is engaged from outside the trigger guard, also a smart and sensible idea.

I presume those of you disliking the Mini on the safety position must hate the Remington 870 and having to fumble around in an awkward corner within a 3/8" of the trigger to manipulate the safety.

PS... Just bought another Mini  not a single one was in stock within 1000kms of me it seems. One in Edmonton, but blued and Restricted.

Just out of curiosity...I wonder what percentage of the stone-axe-reliable, battle-proven and bullet-proof CZ's owned by CGNers have required the services of a welder to keep them functioning properly once the gremlin grabbed hold?

Shot both, never owned either-yet.
Why do I get the flavor of this thread is like;
CZ= bikers who sit at coffee shops looking at parked bikes and extolling what should be cool (or should I spell that with a "K") while,
current model stainless mini30's= guys in the fields using them.
Other than that I see that someone needs to make a ten round conversion for the mini or a stainless 858 (paint don't protect the bore).

Because you are obviously pretty far removed from bikes that do not have pedals. Guys in the field using them? Farmers kids in the wheat field?

Given that the gremlin is a factory installed feature of every single 858 and the very low percentage of owners that actually get their carrier tabbed, probably less than one might think. Out of the thousands of rds I put through my first 858 I had it happen once then learned quickly that it only happens when your pulling the trigger way too fast (its hard to outrun an overgassed semi!) or when squeezing the trigger too slowly (you get kind of a bumpfire effect that leads to a light strike) Hasn't happened since :)
