I got the idea from Flabalob and with out his help I would have never of got this working so thanks Flobalob.

I first bought a Ak47 scope mount with SKS rail which I had to weld on a
1/4" peice on steel to allow the mount clear the reciever.
I then filed and sanded the mateing surface to make it mount fit straight on the gun so it would not be canted. I the machined a 1/8" groove on the bottom of the mateing side to clear the lower legde of the reciever.

After that I had to drill the pilot holes (3) though the rail and then used the rail hole as a jig to drill the reciever holes. BE careful and give your self lots of space to play with, you dont want the screws getting in the way of your firing mech. Also pull the trigger and see if anything is in the way when you do that.

Once that was done I tapped the rail and drilled access holes for the firing pin, selector and sear axis pins. Just in case you have a problem with the trigger mech, then at least you wont have to take the rail off to fix it.

Last of all l had to cut off the front over hanging weaver rail to allow stripper clips to work and to make sure the ejecting caseing would not hit anything.

I just seen a 858 done by Bruce at lock and Load in edmonton, and it looks fantastic . They had one of those Russian 8x scopes you can buy (Iforget the website) with the mount built into it. He told me he charges a 150 to mount it,
but it looked goog on an 858, if I get pics I will post them.

How do you find it to shoot compared with the iron sights Dsiwy?

the iron sights are abit more accurate but the red dot is better for fast and low light shooting.
Plus the bushnell red sucks!!!! if you change the retical you loose your zero!!!! not impressed but i did pay $120 for it so its my fault lol
Am going to save up and get a OKO or aimpoint
Also my right eye is bad so I find the red dot abit fuzzy but the iron sight crisp, I need glasses lol

The mount is rock soild and does not loose its zero when removed for cleaning :)

Also LOCK tight your all your mount screws since mine came loose after firing.

Scope rails should need no welding when using a Russian scope as these have built in mounts which do not put the scope over the centre of the bore.

There are a lot of details on this thread

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63636&page=2

The reason I had to weld a spacer on mine is that the mounting rail is very thin and when I place the scope mount on it interfears with the ridge on the Vz reciever.

I have a TacPoint on mine and it is really good, I paid about $130 US for it, it came with a months guarantee so I gave it a good work out when I got it and it's been fine in every respect.
I find it a lot more accurate than the iron sights, especially if I adjust the dot down so I can see what I'm aiming at through the dot, this way I can aim precisely. I know that's not what a red dot is made for, but it works well when I want to be spot on.

I had to sort out my mount before I had even fired a shot, it was about 20 yard out at 100 Yds, I put lock tight on all the screw threads. I have a different mount than yours, mine is a SVD mount like flabalobs.

Mine has a spacer as well, but I think thats only needed when you install a mount that goes over the centre of the action. The Russian scopes with the built in mount are all offset to the left and should clear the step in the reciever without any problem. They are an odd design that seems to swing to the left and then back to the right again, I think this is so they are easy to mount without bashing the mount into the reciever wall, but I could be wrong:)

I notice that the lever that attatches your mount is close to the trigger, does it get in the way at all ?

I would love to see this left offset russain sight it sounds pretty cool.

and No the lever never gets in the way at all but I am a Right handed shooter.

Very nice, I love it. Put an AK stock on it now:p Seriously, with the extra hight of the AK buttstock, I bet it'd be super comfortable with that mount.

Mine is done - 2 day turn around

Here is a pic of my SVD mount and rail. Sent my 858 out to Flobalob on Monday, he sent it back to me on Tuesday .. with the rail and mount attached. I have seen his work, he does a good job. I got tired of trying this and that, wasting a bunch of $$. Getting someone that has done it already is ALOT easier. Can't wait to get out and give it a go!!

Very Very nice It took me afew days since I was teaching my self how too machine and tap LOL so I took things very slow since I did not want to ruin my new gun.

I like the SVD mount better then mine since the SVD is lower and more compacted. I'll try it on my new VZ58 am going to buy and see how round two goes
