irons sights on a battle rifle makes sense, scopes are for bolts

Exactly! Iron sights are essential on a battle type rifle.... think m14, sks, ar15.....

Irons are much much more durable, don't need batteries and don't have glass that can break.

I hope the 958 has a rail at the spot on the receiver where the rear iron sight normally is. That way one could mount the rear iron type of their choice (or none at all). Of course it would have to line up properly with the front sight. Then a co-witness with a red dot type scope would be possible.

Rifles with iron sights only are the fax machine of the combat rifle world. In this day and age, irons are for backup. In fact one of the advantages of optics is that, in conjunction with BUIS, they provide redundant sighting systems. Iron sights can be damaged or knocked out of alignment, too!

Durability is a non-issue with quality modern optics, as opposed to $50 Bushnell blister pack scopes and Airsoft-grade red dots. Battery life is also not much of a big deal: replace your Aimpoint battery once a year whether it needs it or not as preventative maintenance.

Give the 958 the ability to mount AR-style stocks and rail space front and rear to accommodate a variety of AR-style BUIS and optics and all bases should be covered. CSA already makes rifles with a more-or-less standard VZ 58 configuration.

why are so many people hell bent on making a battle rifle out of this gun? this gun for 99.998% of the users is gonna be a toy, or at best a hunting rifle. you are not going to war with it.

if you are on a hunt, and damage the scope. do you remove the scope and keep hunting? i highly doubt it. if you needed the scope for a clean kill at 100m or so, i doubt you would continue with just sights risking just wounding the animal.

The only guns I buy have iron sights. I still put optics on most but I always like practicing with irons first. I also like that they dont take batteries and are a lot harder to brake than an optic.

I guarantee to buy one of these when they come out just to support wolverine. I hope it comes to life sooner than later.

Just for the record my current favourite setup is a red dot that is co-witnessed with iron sights. Makes for a great 100 yard brush rifle! Everyone is different so the more versatility we have on the 958 the better. On that note I will be just as happy with buis. After all fixed irons are kinda not too sleek and ###y. Looking forward to the arrival of the 958 sooner rather then later. Mr. Wolverine is off to check on production this week so my wish may be close to coming true! Yay, feels like Christmas!

I'm sure the bureaucrats are already looking for ways to reclassify this newest "evil" black rifle of death. After all stupid is as stupid does!

if the 858 is prohib then the 958 could be a 858/58 variant......Sh*t i dont know, wright your mp's this has a plausible chance of going down in flames.

Mr. Wolverine is willing to take the gamble from what I've read on another of his posts. 2014 is going to be a landmark year for the firearms community no doubt. I'm going to be optimistic and say the House of Commons will smack down the RCMP's decision to reclassify. Write your member of parlement! Talk is cheap.

I think your concern is warranted.

Best to not even speculate as this time.

I am sure the new 958 will be made on a semi ONLY reciever

Even if they are made on a semi receiver, I am sure the bureaucrats are just waiting for another government to come in and issue an OIC on the family. The writing is all on the wall.

the 858 was determined a CONVERTED AUTO. this is a brand new receiver. there is no question about if it was ever a machine gun FFS!!!!!

I was thinking about that and I thought (not an official thought just IMO) the 858 receivers were re-milled in such a manor that re-conversion to FA would be impossible thus why the RCMP lab ok'd them in the first place. But that said this thread is about the new 958 and since it is a newly manufactured receiver as has been noted it should be ok.... Unless more reneging from the lab happens at a later date... but that never happened before....
