CZ/Brno older commercial rifle.

Onty,
Cal is 7x57

I know where there is a 21 short barrel in 7 Ackley Imp. They have blasted the metal finishes for a matte blue. It has a nice grained stock with no cracks but is cut to accept a recoil pad.
Honestly it is alright for a project gun but it looks not so great with the matte finish. Makes a guy want to cry when you see crap like that done to a good rifle.

Here are a couple I've found (not mine) but it shows the Early round receiver claw mount I wish I had. Note the different safety, this one is a very early ZG47 if I remember right.

And one that lives in BC now. I put my Meopta on it for the pics.

I have held one full stock round bridge BRNO with original scope and mounts. Unfortunately the stock had been snapped at the grip was poorly repaired. The butt of stock had also been brutally attacked by an amateur wood carver leaving something that resembled a deer. :(

IIRC the guy wanted over $1000 for it. As much as I wanted to save it and get a custom stock for it I didn't have the cash for such an expensive project.

Did anybody here buy it?

What a great thread...:) Noel, the extra pics are great! Nechako, yours too man! (as farshot says, they too have kept me awake a while ago after seeing them)

I have been on watch wanting a decent 21 for quite a while. Seeing these, I'm looking harder.....;)

Damn those are nice!

That would be my choice over any off the shelf RemChester!

BRNO 21's and ZG's are such nice rifles. Thanks for the pix!

I covert a ZG-47 in 9.3x62....its a dream rifle for sure

The 21H , ZG47, CZ550 as with all other "large" BRNO CZ uses 19 mm dovetal mounts. They are made by BRNO/CZ, Leupold, Warne, and a few others. I prefer the BRNO CZ. They did make them (and still do if you can find them) with separate rings or with rings attached by a cross bridge. The cross bridge ones are very very strong for the big bores.
All rings made for the BRNO/CZ has a recoil lug built into one ring to fit the slot in the rear left side of the dovetail to prevent recoil movement.

Lots of times you find these wonderful rifles defaced by people drilling and mounting a base sot hey can fit a Weaver ring or whatever -- I know it is no big deal - but the dovetails are such a simple elegant solution that I can never understand why the proper rings are just not put onthem.

Even the certain Parker Hale mounts will fit as PH used BRNO actions for a while in their rifles.

The mag plate will drop out by pushing in the stud and pushing backwards on the plate. They may very tight and you may need to use a brass drift to tap it back while holding down the stud.

Thanks for the great response. On the mag plate. I finally figured it out with your help. I was thinking the pin had to be pushed pass the mag plate but this is a 2 piece pin. Using 2 brass pins one to push the pin the other to pry the base plate back ( had the mag frame in a vise)
I can not tell the model # of this gun? Where would that be? I see a # 49 beside a symbol on the action and I see a # 49 on the barrel and I see a 449 on the mag frame. I see I will have to glass bed this as the very thin stock split between the trigger and mag.
This gun has a barrel lug with a blued diamond in the fore stock.
Thanks

stepnout,

Most likely you have a 21H, posting pics would help. All of them had the diamond inletted in the forearm, it is an anchor screw for the barrel.
The mag pin won't go together backwards......they are very stubborn to get out but really you shouldn't need to remove it unless you want to put a lighter spring in there to make it function.
It might be good to bed the action if it willl see alot of use. I never did to mine but I did relieve the tang just to be safe.

There is a double digit number stamped on the barrel and receiver on the left side, that is the date of mfg.

If your safety is on the bolt stop side then you have a 21, if you have one like that claw mounted rifle I posted it could be a transition ZG model.

We need pics!

I have a question, a good a place to ask as any. How were the stocks on 1954 vintage, 21Hs finished? I have seen them in all kinds of make-up, Mine has a simple, pores not filled, all most a no gloss finish. It's been through at least 4 hands before mine and I would like an original looking finish. Thanks for any imput --- John303.

in my humble opinion - they had either a highly polished oil (such as Shaftoil) finish or a light varnish / laquer surface type finish -- I am not quite sure what it really was - but it did have a "coating" on the surface vs. a deep finish.

I agree, both the minty 21's I've had wore a thin shiny coat. There's not much there and it comes off pretty fast which could be why many seem to be just oiled. Mine was 95% when I got it and it seemed only oiled from when I bought it in 03.

Good looking rifles CZ. I like most guns kept the way they are, having said that if you had a 21H action only, what would you do? I happen to have one and am toying with many ideas as to calibre, stock, barrel etc., including just getting all the pieces and "make" another 21H. Toss me some ideas, confuse me even more. --- John303.
