I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of hammer and punch, but I can't get it to move for the life of me.

Any tips or tricks? I don't recall my 858 being this difficult. The punch just seems to mar the retaining pin. Are they premed at all to be held in place? The NEA upper rail went on easy, but the bottom is a bugger.

Thanks

Bigger hammer fixes 99% of problems. The other 1% requires high explosives. I'd try the bigger hammer first. I use a brass punch with no issues and can remove/reinstall them many times without damaging them so I'm thinking yours may be excessively flared.

Not sure about the CZ, but the pin on my CSA is tapered on one end, so maybe its supposed to come out only on one side? And you're hammering on the other?

It being that tight is a good sign that the hand guard is shimmed properly so it wont wobble. My CZ 858 wasn't shimmed properly. The lower hand guard wobbled and the retaining pin would pop out just from turning the gun on its side. Quickly shimming it with bubble gum wrapper paper fixed it up good ;). Always use a brass punch if you don't want to mark up your gun. Brass is softer than steel and won't easily mark it. If the pin doesn't want to come out even with excessive hitting, then try the other way. The pin may be tapered to only go in one way and back out the other. If that still doesn't work, try using penetrating oil. let it soak for awhile, and try again. If that still doesn't work, then your only options is heat or really have to hammer the ####er to get it out. Its the tightness of the hand guard that keeps that pin in. On my Cz 858, even after I shimmed the hand guard to fit tighter, it had a little bit of forward and backward play. If I pushed the hand guard forward, the pin came out easier.

The OEM CZ handguard pin is not tapered. It may be flared on both ends or it may be a friction fit.

In either case, the solution is the same. Support the receiver on a solid foundation, like a block of wood, with room for the pin to come out, and hit it. Use a big enough hammer and smack it. If it won't move, get a bigger hammer.
