I failed to clean my CZ858 properly before leaving town. I oiled everything quickly, and when I got back...well...if there was a "child protection" service for guns they'd take my rifle away cuz my baby looks bad.

Gas piston is fine, there was a tiny bit of rust in the groove but it's all cleaned out and polished a wire brush.

i'm concerned about the bore. the rifling isn't looking bright and shiny. i've run solvent down it with the nylon brush. poured boiling hot water through it a few times. patches are coming out a little dirty, but it just doesn't look that good yet.

any suggestions? i hear about this "smaller brush with fine steel wool" trick, but that just makes me nervous.

i wish these non-restricted CZ's had chrome lined bores.

After corrosive primer neglect, I've seen rifles with not shiney clean barrels still shoot well. I think long as you have good rifling/grooves it should still be a good shooter. It's probably worse in your mind that in actuality. I wouldn't worry too much about accuracy being affected a whole lot.

I have seen some barrels that are atrocious. I wouldn't doubt their performance is compromised.

I'd try some JB bore paste to try and bring back it's luster, Bet you learned your lesson now;)
Suposidly amona will nutralise the corosive residue, so when I dont have time to clean I spray the rifle in and out with windex, so fare its worked fine, no signs of rust and no signs of after affects from the windex. But you should get a second opinion before trying it. I dont mind wrecking my own gun gut I'd hate to be responcible for the death of someones toy.

I forgot to clean mine after I shot some Czech surplus through it, and the barrel was rusted the next day. I took a .30 cal brush, ran it down the barrel in a similar manner to a chimney sweeping brush, and oiled it up. There was no damage and it still shot good.

Kinda glad I got the chrome lined barrel, I neglected my VZ58 for a year, came back, checked it over and zero rust other then just a bit on the muzzle.

ever heard of anyone being able to chrome line the barrel as an aftermarket upgrade? can a gunsmith do this?

Don't panic.

Clean it out good. Use hot water and windex. I know a lot of guys say that doesn't work and there is no science behind it, but hey, it seems to work for me.

Then clean it again good with a decent quality product like CLP.

Leave the bore moist - not dripping - and shoot it hard.

Unless you have rusted the bore badly, it should be ok.

I have shot a Mini-30 that had a badly f**ked bore from shooting corrosive and not cleaning, and it actually shot ok once the pits coppered up.

I have been using brand name Windex with ammonia for over a year, I read about the ammonia neutralizing the salt on a surplus rifle shooters forum.

Seems to work. I just squirt a bunch down the barrel, gas port etc and then use swabs to get all the moisture out. I also treat gas affected parts ( bolt,op rod etc) I use brake clean on the parts to eliminate moisture accumulation.

I feel the key is the lube.

I use AP-5 JET LUBE see link for stats:

http://www.jetlube.com/jetlube/uploads/pdf/msdspdf/ap5.pdf

It is amazing. Stays where you put it does not sling or run and also permiates the pores of the metal for extra protection. All the crud sits on top of the grease all you have to do is wipe it out and apply new!

You can get it at Acklands-Grainger for about $20 a tube. But I have only used 10% of a tube over a year. Bye Bye oil except for the barrel. (Don't use grease in the barrel !!!)

Windex works for cleaning corrosive residue because it is water based. The salts from corrosive primers are polar (like water) and must therefore be dissolved (not neutralised) by water or a water-based solution to be removed. Windex has the added bonus of being a degreaser, so it can remove carbon fouling, which may be hiding some of the corrosive salt.

I like to use Simple Green on my SKS for the same reason.

Be careful with ammonia. In high concentrations it will damage barrels as well. Probably not enough in windex to do too much damage but always wipe down with oil after using a cleaner with ammonia in it.

If the barrel is just slightly dull, it will probably brighten up some as you shoot it.

There is NO ammonia in windex !
Soap,water and ammonia D -
Ammonia D is chemically different from ammonia - it's a dessicant -
It's what makes the soap and water evaporate on glass. :):)
