CZ858 vs Win94 for bush carbine

I hunt usually Cowichan Valley, around Nit Nat (Granite Main) or Powell River. It's all coastal mountain rain forest, so you always get wet and tired. I never once went hunting and not had a gun get thoroughly soaked through, except in September, when the hunting isn't that great and you have to get up at 3am.

The last time I went out, I spent 20 minutes oiling my Mosin. 10 minutes after getting out of the truck, you couldn't find a part of the gun that wasn't wet. You're basically breaking your gun down in the truck to try and dry it off with the vents.

Still curious what rugged part of BC you call home Rocket?

If you're on the wet coast of BC your in cedar and douglas fir, either old growth with 10-15 yards between trees or the nastiest tangle of un-spaced second growth imaginable where a ray of sunlight barely penetrates. Lots of salal and underbrush on the roadsides.
The Coast mountains were my stomping grounds up until a few years ago, and I spent many an hour chasing the "pacific ghosts".

Here's a typical scene of the bush in the area. Add moss-covered boulders and bluffs if you're headed up the mountainside.

Don't call the 858 an "assault rifle" because it isn't. It is a semi auto only sporting rifle. Assault rifles have full auto or burst capability. The anti's troll this site and they are just looking for crap where we misnomer these guns and then use it against us.

happy or not this is an assault rifle made for the civilian market ...
doubt it will be hard to make a semi auto to a full auto if you want my bet as the cz fully auto model is still made .... have you heard spenatz prefers to use the cz against any ak ...???? thev58 ...

and the antis dont need us to be just open your eyes ....

I spent many many years in that exact area, all through the gulf islands and up the coast. I'd be looking for stainless, not painted. :) I now quite enjoy hunting in November under blue skies on a sparkling skiff of snow! -15 and clear beats +15 and pouring for this fella! That said, the west coast, my first home, is hard to beat for beauty. As long as you can avoid the lower mainland.

I use a Mini-Thirty, scoped, and it works just fine thank you, because the area I hunt it with 150 meters would be an extremely long shot.

I usually hunt with a Mosin, before that I used an Enfield, but I was tired of the rust. A painted 858 with synthetic furniture would hold up better, as you can just pop the action off and run a dry patch down the barrel. I can take my Win94 down in the truck now, and dry the parts off on the dash, but you have to spend a bit of time oiling it first. Another option I thought of was a chrome lined SKS with synthetic stock.

Eventually I'll end up with just one rifle, some form of stainless bolt with iron sights in a 20 or 22 inch barrel. I'll get it in 308 with a detach mag and never hunt with anything else. The Savage 16fcss seems to be the perfect rifle for the coast, will just need some aftermarket sights installed.

For grouse and gray squirrels I used to use a 10/22SS but I'm switching to an AR7. If the gun sucks, like some people say it does, I'll get a papoose.

By definition, an assault rifle is select fire. The CZ cannot be made full auto, not without a different receiver and a heck of a lot of know-how. The authorities go to town on these things prior to import. If it would have been easily converted, it would not have been allowed. It is not an assault rifle, don't call it such as it is an incorrect term for the gun.

Great pic of BC there. Looks like CZ858 country to me.

I can't see the need for drying out a rifle in the truck.
My 94 has been in beaver ponds with me before, and all I did was shake the water out and keep going.
Dry it off when you get back to camp and clean it there. Do any serious disassembly you feel you need there. That open bottom on the 94 lets a lot of crap fall through that stays in other rifles, it also lets it dry out quickly.
The exception is the tube mag. Periodic removal of the spring, and cleaning the bore is something I recommend.

Very, very good post, and dead accurate. Nice job on setting things straight.

The hunting in the Cowichan is best when the weather just starts to get ugly. That pic almost summarizes my hunting grounds perfectly, just add more hills.

I would give the 858 the edge, mostly due to the fact that as long as the paint is intact, its going to be fine rust wise. Even if you don't mind oiling your gun down like a greasy french fry... i would still stick with the 858 because its easier to take down and oil the heck out of.

Curious paint is being offered as a benefit to the 858, as if a Winchester's not a can of $7 Tremclad from the same effect? Better yet, armacoat or powder coat.

Also, to be fair a 7.62x39 is not even close to the .30-30. .30-30's doing the same things with 50 grains more bullet weight. I still cart my Mini-30 stainless around, but definitely don't think it's a .30-30 or virtually one either.

Dude...do you just have to be right or are you legitimately thick?

I own both and if I only had to have one it would be the CZ 858. It has a huge positive in the fact that it can be used all year round to target practice for cheap in addition to being a hunting rifle. I don't see many positives that the Win94 has over the CZ especially just for deer.

PFFT...The Winchester 94 was an assault rifle long before the CZ858...my old Winchester 37a was a tactical shotgun too....it had an external hammer..and you could take it apart in 3 pieces!!!...:HR:
