da mmmmmm price of ammo is getting insane

Thanks to the "Sportsman of the Year" and the "Obama" effect that has caused the run on firearms, ammo and anything associated with shooting in the good old US of A.:(

There are ways to mitigate all this, shoot alot, enjoy your favorite sport:
a). reload
b) choose rifles/pistols in cals. that allow inexp. components eg: for a hunting round choose a .44 mag. that uses inexpensive cast bullets and much less powder then your RUM.
c) use reduced loads when possible esp. for punching paper.
d) buy in bulk or arrange group buys

X1000 for reloading. I have a few rifles that take very expensive rounds. Reloading lets me shoot a pile.

A little math.

1lb powder ( $30 give or take ) 34 cents a round
Brass reused so negligible
bullet ( premium ) 80 cents
Primer lets say 5 cents

$1.20 per round ( BTW this is for a 3oo weatherby mag. Have you priced out good ammo with premium bullets for this lately .

$24 per box with premium bullets, bulk bullets my .308 loads for under $10 per box )

Every month pick up 50-60 bucks worth of supplies and in a year you'll be set for a very long time. That is of course if you don't love running large clips out of a semi over and over again. For that maybe a .22 would be more economical. Reloading also gives you a small sense of independence by not being the victim of price gouging. Stock up, buy smart as was mentioned above and shoot to your hearts content

I just got back from Wallyworld here on the Wet Coast and picked up 4 boxes of Winchester SuperX 150gr Powerpoint for $14.85 a box and I saw 30-06 for $17.97 for 180gr too. Not much selection but I got what I wanted this time. Only Winchester ammo but I reload Winni cases so that works for me. I noticed the Silver Tip 308 was about $29 a box. Not a fan of Wallyworld but hard to pass that up.

I think the industry, right down to the dealers are creating all this panic. People should just refuse to pay these "price gougers" and "fear mongers". Hear in Victoria, Island-Outfitters are charging $45+ LB of powder so they can just F&*ck-off.

There is definitely some truth in what you are saying. The "industry" is speculating that things are going to get alot tighter for supplies, due to political will, so this in turn causes panic.

This is a paragraph from a one page explanation, from the Sierra Bullet webpage

Why Can't I Find Sierra Bullets?
The real reason is demand. Sierra has been making more bullets per week recently than we have in our rich 62 year history, but we simply can not get ahead of the demand. After the 2008 elections, orders began increasing overnight and have only continued to increase thus far.

Shooting costs

Overheard a couple shooters talking about the shortage and expense of shotgun wads due to the war in Irag and something about the Chinese!!!
Guess they shoot a lot of skeet/trap over there...ha!ha!

Odd too as the price of brass and lead is tanked. Brass was paying out at almost $2 a pound and lead at $0.80 per pound last year. FYI brass is paying out at $0.60/lb and lead is $0.20/lb and not likely to go up for some time so what gives??? I do the recycling for a large range and follow the prices carefully.

Same reason oil is $45 a barrel but gas is still at the price it was when oil was $90 a barrel, because people are still buying it! Reloading might work for the short term, as soon as the industry gets used to people paying $45.00/k for primers, the rest of the components will follow suit. The increase in the price of bullets was blamed on the material costs. Now that the material costs have plummeted we will be told how entire warehouses were stocked with copper and lead when the price was $3.50/lb and how that all has to be used up before the price will come down.

Somebody, somewhere is gouging, pure and simple. It's up to the individual as to how badly they want to be gouged.
