Dangerous game scopes

Low Power Variable Optic.

Schmidt and Bender short dot, Kahles Helia 1-5, Leupold Vx3i, 5, or 6, etx
 
I think a standard plex reticle with the small illuminated red dot in the centre is ideal. The Zeiss version is just perfect.
 
Imo, "dangerous game scopes" are a good set of iron sights. Game is not dangerous until close up and then a scope is next to useless even on 1x magnification.

I have not seen many professional dangerous game rifles with scope if it is the (only) dedicated task for that firearm.

E.g. none of +170 hunters on a great drive hunt will use a scope when going on "Nachsuche" for wounded boar. On a multi purpose setup rifle, they will pull the scope off. Others get their iron sight rifles out and put the scoped gear to rest.

I’m not much of a “dangerous game Hunter” but Finn agaard and Phil shoemaker are two of many with considerable experience that would disagree with you on that point.
 
^ Sure enough, if your battery is good, perfect. One can hope it is not crapping out or fogs up, gets hung up or has some other issues not characteristic for mechanical sights while you go at it.
 
This is a good post, the bausch and lomb 2-7x32 on my .375 just died via fairly serious flood and I need to put something back on there. Was thinking of finding a 6500 2.5-16 because moose hunting here is either up close or across a valley, but I like to hear peoples options.

Don Heath will disagree as well but he is no more among us and he used very often a red dot on is 9.3x62 rifle used for back up with clients and dangerous game.

i used myself a 460 weatherby magnum for back up and it was with a scope.

and i used red dot and scope to go after wounded boars but it was before i was on cgn so that does not count ...
 
The trophy hunters have it right, ehh. That is all that counts. Hunting for money and media attention. That is how it goes nowadays, lol.
 
Batteries for red dots can last years. Put a new battery in at the start of the season whether it needs it or not and it should be fine.

Even if the red dot does somehow you still have a standard crosshairs to aim with on 1x magnification.
 
I am definitely faster with a low power optic than I am with iron sights, that was the case when I had perfect vision too.
 
Dangerous game rifles are hunting rifles first, foremost and always. Charges are for the most part, an interesting fantasy so don't plan your hunt around that. A realistic scenario is you tracked then stalked to relatively close range to a bunch of black blobs that smell like cattle in the thorn bush and you are sort of wishing desperatley that you had brought some compact binos so you can make head from tail before they take off like a bunch of scared dusty rabbits and you have to start over again on another herd and/or another day on your rapidly ticking clock/calendar. If the stars, wind and luck align and you can identify a shooter bull in the bunch and you are carrying an iron sighted or dim little low powered scope that is an eighth of the binos you never brought then you'll likely have some thoughts about which orfice they could be shoved up while you watch the afore mentioned black dusty cattle smelling bunny rabbits bugger off on you before you can find a way to thread a bullet though the brush.

So anyway; bring some scope. ;)
 
I'm having irons added, the scope is for distance/first shot opportunity. Tbh the scope would be mounted on a Talley QR, so if I'm going anywhere close and personal, it would be coming off.

Paul aka supecub had an interesting comment about open sights and his 375 taylor. less expensive and better to have a second scope sighted in and ready to go just in case.

im getting older (not as much as some here) and my vision is not better than it was so scope is defintely a good help.

and yes always good to have binocs ...
 
Never wanted to play the 'Dangerous Game' for the most part. Don't like roaming around with things that want to eat me.
But Buff is another deal... logically I know they will stomp me quite handily or gore me another hole. But I am Ranch raised and against logic I am not scared of Bovines in the same way most folks are... been doing a little more reading on it and am already spending the money from the next Oil Boom LoL.

Excellent reply! I'm a big lad, I'll be carrying binos as I'm used to using them often (western hunter).
