A lot of times it was put on the barrel so that the swivel stud wouldn't tear your support hand apart on heavy recoiling rifles.

My thought. A fixed tough as nails low power scope, or a tough variable with the first number 1-, or 2-
Its not normal hunting, or outdoor channel long range fantasy. No fancy reticles, illumination, or dialing turrets. Dangerous game. It wants to bite, claw, or stomp you. For that to happen, and the game to be dangerous, its across the room bayonet distance.
Will add my "dangerous rifles". Rem 700 lss 375 rum, break, 4.5-14x40(it's my peace river rifle),.Model 1917 416 rigby, Nikon Monarch 3 1-4x20 German #4, and.Marlin guide, 45-70, ported, irons.

Both my 375 H&H and 9.3X62 rifles have the sling swivel on the barrel.

True and good point. A Husky 46 I carry has a Schnabel fore-end and it always rubs when I carry it slung either on the shoulder or back. The stock has to fit the "sling stud on barrel" setup to be comfortable I found.

I always thought the original purpose of a short forend with schnabel was to aid in better form when shooting offhand.
A schnabel that is shaped for function, not just ornamentation, should fit well so you can cup your hand around it to pull the rifle backwards into your shoulder.

I shoot my .458 Lott like that with a standard forend with my fingers wrapped around the barrel.
Works good for recoil control in rapid fire; but is a long ways away from the last word in precision.
Speaking of my Lott; I have a VX3 2.5-8 on it and have killed more buffalo with it on 8 than 2.5. I have a B & C reticle in it, though the way I use it is hardly the way Leupold intended. Sighted for 150 its entirely useable 0-200. If I want to use the reticle its 150,200,250,300.

Yeah I get that opinion, tbh I find I shoot a lot of precision rifle BEO. And 3-5 power doesn't seem to bother me much, I just prefer a biiiiit more field of view.
I do the same with my shorter range rifles that wear B&C scopes, but with the flatter cartridges, I use as intended, zeroed at 200 for stadia at 300 and 400... I have done and tested it on 6.5 Rem Mag w/140's, 7 WSM w/150's, .308 w/150's, 7.62X57 w/165's, .30/06 w/180's, .300 WSM w/200's and a few others and it works just fine to make kill shots at those ranges. The B&C and Varmint Hunters reticles are my favorites.
The cartridges I really like get a 300 yard (sometimes 300 meters) sight-in. An STW, 7-300, 257 and 270 Weatherby or even a boring as heck 300 Win with the right bullets will go 650 at the infinity pin plus or minus a bit. 28 would do it as well, though I'm dialling mine. Deadly set up in the right place and time. Doesn't weigh anything the rest of the time.

An STW, 7-300, 257 and 270 Weatherby or even a boring as heck 300 Win with the right bullets will go 650 at the infinity pin plus or minus a bit. 28 would do it as well, though I'm dialling mine. Deadly set up in the right place and time. Doesn't weigh anything the rest of the time.
How do you like your 7-300? I was thinking a 7mm practical when my .300 barrel dies, try for 180/190 grainers out of a 26 or 27" tube

In my opinion the 7-300 Win out-practicals the Practical. Yes, it's a verb now
I shoot the same loads at the same speeds as Foster does, don't need or want custom dies and a good buddy already had the reamer so I didn't need to buy that. Its like being handed a free barrel. I used an appropriate bushing in my Redding type S 300 Win dies and did the initial neck-down with a 7mm Rem or universal 7mm neck die; just to see if I could. Did I mention no fire-forming? So anyway, no fire-forming.Foster has stated that if he had even known that the 7-300 was a thing he wouldn't have bothered. As it was, he was attached to his Practical concept drawings when he found out that the 7-300 was there the whole time.
My standard load for my 7-300 is the 180 gr VLD. I shoot the same chart as one of my STWs that happens to use the same bullet. Does it with less of the same powder and 2" less barrel. I've got more shots down the barrel than I ever got out of an STW and the throat hasn't budged. Can't help thinking there's a practical limit to how much powder you can push through a 7mm hole.

The rifle kinda fell into my lap, I also love the history of the cartridge and its reputation for relatively light recoil and deep penetration.
