Dangerous game short range match. The challenge is on!

Groups measured centre to centre.

For timing whatever you can manage to get the elapsed time of the three shots.

Position to start, sights on target, safety off, 1 in the chamber and 2 in the magazine ie. the moment of truth. No slings, no gun rests or shooting sticks or bipods etc. of any kind. Only freehand standing or freehand kneeling. Shooting a charging bear from the prone position is probably a bad idea.

I'm going to try to get to Ridgedale tomorrow with:

BRNO 602 375 H&H
Marlin 1895 GS 45-70
Mossberg 500A 12 ga

Also ran: LE No.5 .303

Sounds good, I am going to try this weekend. I'll take a few of my 870's with slugs, and my Marlin .450 guide gun. This sounds like some challenging fun. Asides from that, this is probably something a person should practice anyway.

Interested in how the scoring works as far as ammo goes. Lord knows I can shoot measly factory loads far better than full power reloads as I am sure most can.

Scoring different for reloads and factory loads maybe

If everyone knows their bullet weights and muzzle velocities then we can compare scores by the following:

Group size (inches) * Time (seconds)/ Muzzle Energy

Again the lowest score wins.

If not then if I shoot wimpy factory 45/70 loads and Camp Cook shoots his hot handloads and our scores are in the same neighborhood, then Camp Cook wins.

I'm interested in improving my skills and learning from how everybody's different guns and loads perform. Winning is secondary in this honour match for me.

Regarding a 'dangerous game' contest, the only thing I see is that dangerious game encounters are at very close range and occur very fast! Most of the time you will have a chance for a single shot only.

How do you propopse to deal with this?

I was thinking a single 90 degree turn and 'snapshot' into the head of a rhino, for example, in under 2 seconds at 5 yards.

My shooting distance for bears is 25 yards. Beyond that I will hold fire, inside 25 yards, I will shoot.

A bear can run at about 12 yards/second. So the minimum time I will have is around 2 seconds.

Not all dangerous game encounters occur at a full charge speed. So I decided on 3 shots for the contest.

Here's my first attempt with my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 with my top loaded 405gr RNFPGC Bullet Barn cast bullets @ 1950fps.

I can only time the shots by watching the timer on the video clip but it looks like 3 seconds for the 3 shots in both of the video clips. The first attempt resulted in a 4 1/2" 25 yard group and the second attempt was a 4 3/4" 25 yard group.

Here's a link to YouTube...

1st attempt... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YCl_1lsta4

2nd attempt... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1XdONEdTYs

Here's a link to the photo of me with both targets taken by fellow CGNTZ Unibomber he signed the targets after he took the picture. The first group is in my left hand and if I measured all 6 shots combined they measure about 5 1/4"... :D

All groups where measured from outside to outside of the widest shots.

Nice shooting Cam. I watched your first video and it looked like 2 seconds elapsed time not 3 seconds.

I couldn't make it out to Ridgedale this weekend. Looks like I'll have to play hooky this week.

Nice shooting CC!

I was out yesterday and I got so tied up in testing reloads and trying to beat the sun from going down I forgot all about this. Hopefully this week...

Actually I don't even eat pork... :D

My Marlin 1895GS 45-70 is one of the most awesomely, reliable, accurate short range firearms I own...

I recommend that everyone gets one...

BIGRED it's not just levers actions... I can shoot all firearms like that...

I believe you Cam... anyone who can lever three hole groups like that has had some practice....
I am gonna put the reddot on my Beretta Extrema-2 with K/O and do the semi-shuffle with some slugs and see if I can come close to your time.

so far, that's the best comment on CGN thus far in 2007.....and yes I am keeping track.BTW I am seriously considering coming to that Abbottsford sports show in March........is it worth me flying there or is it like Edmonton's crap show.?

It's an ok show but you wouldn't catch me flying too it...

There is a benefit of flying to the show though... you just have to walk out of the front door of the airport and your at the show....

I am interested in seeing how you will do as well, probably a pretty quick set up I would think.

I have a feeling Camp cook will be hard to beat. He sure is quick on the lever  He would make good bear protection :D

Next bear deffense thread Camp Cook is my answer ;) :D

I picked up a new Sony HDD so I will get Chilly to take some video the next time he comes to shoot. I will shoot an Ithaca 37 with slugs too for comparison. Don't show the video to your lady friends though boys... they will hate you once they get a look at Big Redd.
I'm serious.:p
