Hi fellas.
ive just returned from a 4 day hunt off a big lake in Victoria, Australia. With at first 3 other members from an Australian hunt Forum.

We picked a spot off the Map, around 15kilometers up an arm of the Lake, the day we got to camp was a beautiful day an transiting on the lake via boat was pretty good, although I was mega over packed an my 15hp motor would not plane the boat but it pushed me up in around 30 minutes!

Here is my hunting pals on route to "Chain Saw bay"

We got out Camp set up, minus the tarp, until of course too late and everything wet, then we erect the Tarp to keep us Dry, which wsa a wise move, as it rained for the following 2 days.... quite heavy!

We were prepared, Rain did not dampen our spirits but ignited them, in hopes of turning the Stags on in the mongrel weather.
Wild wind, pouring rain, a burnt out bush in Remote Alpine national Park, it really was an adventure!

Im going to keep it pretty short, but it was My birthday Saturday so I wanted to shoot a stag, I hunted hard for the 3 days and come across little Stag sign but I ran into a lot of Hinds.. Saturday Rained heavy an 'Sir Monk' and I went out to see what we could find, around Lunch time we were watching over a Gulley when on Cue a Hind walked and fed out rather quickly an gave us enough time to settle in behind the Gun and have Sirmonk shoot Hes Frst Ever Deer! I was stoked but Sirmonk was even moreso, Solid double lung shot at 120m, we watched her run off an pile up a further 100m away.... once it set in Sirmonk still couldn't believe it!

A True Wild Free Range Sambar Deer in its 'Natural' Enviroment..... no easy feat but a Serious Addiction!

Thankya fellas!, certainly an adventure with the lads!

Til we return, im up 2 hours away near Myrtleford and Mount Hotham for 2 days hunting an area which shows more Sign of Rutting Sambar Stags!
Plenty of snow up top and with the wild weather past, should be promosing.
Seen 3 hinds this arvo but alot of stag sign.

Cheers

Your hunt area looks like it was recently burned over. Tell us more.

Yeah mate good observation.
I had some intel from the local Department of Primary Industries (ranger type) of a burn up one of the Arms and seen helicopter footage, the footage pricked my interest as it looked very similiar to the Arm we had planned to hunt, from going by goigle earth etc..

So the week before i went for a reccy drive to make sure of a spot to launch the boat and to look over the area an surrounding valleys.

As soon as i got onto the track at 1300m i knew it had been burnt a few month ago, as i lowered to lake level 500m it was completely burnt in our inmediate area and the lakes arm around 10k long an several deep up to the ridge i drove in on!

I seen deer down near the campsite i launched from so knew there was enough green grass and fresh growth to keep a sambar deer browsing. Which ended up being the case , although the deer were spread an constantly on the move feeding, some shadier gulleys held stronger growth thankther faces and that was enough for me.

I think in 1 month...may be ideal and 2 months unreal!!

Cheers fellas!
