My books don't have data for 500gr cast bullet in 45-70. I need some advice for starting / maximum powder charge of IMR4198 for use in a modern Marlin GG.
Thanks

I had a hard time finding data specific to Guide Gun loads and 500gr bullets because so few molds make bullets suitable for the short OAL required for feeding.

The Lyman cast bullet handbook shows 28.5-31.5gr of IMR4198 and a 500gr cast bullet for a level 1 load (1873 trapdoor Springfield) as a starting point. That's with a bullet seated shallower than a 500gr will be to function in a lever rifle. Since you are seating deeper (higher pressure) as well as having a higher max pressure, I'd start at that start load and work up. If you want to be cautious, drop it a couple grains from starting.

I use the Lee .459" 500gr spire point bullet in my Guide Gun but have to single-feed them into the chamber. They also wont eject if unfired without removing the bolt. I've shot them with 40gr of H4895 without issue but they also don't seat as far as a properly-functioning 500gr bullet would in a lever. My records show 1447fps as well if that helps at all.
It's something I tested to see if it worked and don't do it too often; I save the 500gr'ers for my single shot (and usually Goex FFg as well).

Thanks guys, that's very helpful and validates my data. My reason for asking is that I used 30 gr of IMR4198 with the 500 grainer. I found some data online suggesting a load of 40 gr of IMR4198 - that seemed mighty high and made me wonder if i was out-to-lunch about my load. Apparently I am not too far outside reality. :)

Not sure of what cast bullet you're using, but the only info I have available that 'may' help you out is a scan from my RCBS Cast Bullet Manual.

Pg 2 may be the one of interest to you.

I think CGN'er "Camp Cook" was loading 500 gr bullets (and heavier, Jae-Bok Young Piledrivers as I recall) in a Marlin GG once upon a time. He might have have some info too.

I just loaded some Hornady 500gr JRN, 2.550 OAL, Starline brass and CCI#200 LRP.

H4198- started at 35gr, 35.5gr,36gr.

I have not used any yet, would you guys agree that these should be safe to use? They are going to go through a Marlin 1895 SBL.

It's hard to say. I used to shoot those out of a Ruger #1, but the OAL was much longer at 2.925. Where did you get your data?

Chris.

I couldn't find any published data, the 500's seem to be a single shot only deal...or at least they are intended to be used as
such. I just dug around forums and buddy seemed to have a good idea what he was doing. He had shot at least a dozen of them...just curious to hear another opinion.

500 gr Lyman 457125.
IMR 4198 28.5 to31.5. For trapdoor loads
oal 2.835
Lyman cast manual #4.

If anyone needs load data on different cast bullets for 45/70 give me a PM.
I have a few load manuals. I load lead in many calibers. Most of my 45/70
loading is with black powder. Also have data on heavier bullets than 500.

Hornady 500gr DGX loads in my GBL will do 1500 fps MV at near maximum pressure.

What 500gr cast bullet? Different bullets, different recipe's. .457 or .458 or larger? Pure lead or slightly hardened? Have you checked the powder manufacture website.
Fun shooting, scroll down to 45/70, 500gr. http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm
Stevespages.com H-4198 From 25.0 grains to 41.0 grains for a 500 grain bullet. Start low, watch for pressure signs.
