Daver_II's DIY "Black?" lever gun build. *with pictures

I hand picked from a few Marlins to get one that was squared away, and a good one. I certainly wouldn't have bought online or right off the rack. The front hood on Marlins now are really flimsy thin folded metal, just slid right off. A few weeks after I bought, good JM stamped ones started showing up on the EE.
Fare enough. Not sure about Marlins flimsy looking hoods but the ones from Williams front sights and CZ rifle are surprisingly very strong steel. The front sight hood on my CZ is bent because I fell down a small hillside hunting on a snowy day. The front sight itself had no mark on it but the hood is bent. I tried in a vice with pliers but I could not bend it back all the way. Just lets me know just how hard of a hit that hood took. However it did its job well and protected the front sight from damage.

I love the sight picture of a rear peep and circular front sight hood, line them up and you're good to go.

A skinner winged rear sight would look good on this rifle.

Unfortunately they do not co-witness but the sight is easily removable and has a motion on feature as well as rediculous battery life.

I like what you did, but myself I would have went with black wood dye after removing original finish and used an satin finished tung oil topcoats. Easy to maintain and would still show wood grain. Not sure if you removed the original finish. Many times the original finish used covers up the woodgrain. I have actually found beautiful grain on cheaper wood stocks that were covered up by the generic cover stain finish.
