DCRA Annual Matches in Ottawa

I don't think the F Class shooters have the tradition of going to Ottawa for a week of shooting each year. I first went in 1948 and most years since.

This year my son is shooting there and my grandson will be watching his Dad, much the way I did in '49.

Some of the TR shootes ahd to choose between Fullbore and smallbore, since the nationals of both were scheduled the same week. Poor executive planning....

If the DCRA were simply to gather members email addresses and send out an announcement now and then, I suspect we'd see a nice resurgence in attendance.

I'm a member of DCRA. I shoot at Connaught. This is the first I've heard that the matches are on.

Yeah, I know (after the fact) that the announcement was in the magazine but, well, the twice-yearly magazine can get kinda lost in the other periodicals that enter the house. And I don't always read it.

I'm just sayin' that using modern means of communication with members would probably be quite beneficial and produce a marked increase in attendance.

Unofficially at this point, it would appear that Kent Reeve of Cary, North Carolina has won the Macdonald Stewart Grand Agg this year. Last year Kent won the Grand Agg and also the Governor General's Prize.

This afternoon the Commonwealth long range team match is being fired (teams of twelve shooters, each firing 2 sighters and 10 on score at 800m and then 900m). There will be one team from Canada, one from Great Britain, and one from USA. Results ought to be up this evening here.

Tomorrow is the final day of shooting. The Canada Match (team) is fired in the morning, and the 2011 Canadian Championships wrap up with the firing of the Governor General's Prize in the afternoon.

The F Class attendance was down this year ,but I can attest that for everyone who showed up,they enjoyed a full week of doing what shooters generally like to do,SHOOT.
From early warm up matches on the first weekend, the Grand Agg matches that run from
Sunday to Friday and the final weekend series of special matches, one had the chance to shoot as much as they wanted.
Weather was overall very good and only got wet once or twice.Winds and conditions varied from light twitchy to full on 35mph gusts in a torrential downpour.
Barracks were better than some of the cheap hotels I've stayed in and the mess was excellent as usual.
The Target marking was very good with the occasional hiccup and most markers doing
a superior job.
Small glitches (as to be expected from time to time) were generally ironed out very quickly.
Met a lot of new friends, got together with old friends and can now put faces to some I've only talked to via email and phone.Great to see new faces join us this year and missed some of the old regulars.
DCRA was very accommodating squadding all Fers on same relays ,2 to a target.
We shot on DCRA Modified F targets which are very similar to the ICFRA.
F Class Team Canada building process is well under way with practices and was glad to meet "The Two Bills" (Watts and Flintoff)
I'm pleased to again ,have made it through the week standing (for the most part) and can continue to promote The CFRC as a great experience for those that can make it.
There are items being discussed to make this even more F Class friendly ,but regardless of what is done, I'm afraid we will still hear the same gripes about "too long, too far,too expensive".I can only respond by saying that you have almost a full year from today to save, fundraise, book time off, practice ,arrange transportation, practice, work with getting
family approval, practice and look forward to a great experience.
With DCRA providing "match fee" funds towards the CFRC for the Eastern and Western Regionals, perhaps some local PRA fund raising be done to assist their members to attend.
For those that wanted to attend and couldn't ,I would hope you would try for next. For those that could and didn't,I think you missed out on a great week.
My sincerest congratulations to all who attended and especially to all the winners in TR,FTR ,FO and BP(Black powder) .
And special mention to Leo who has now set the record of 4 Gov General wins as well as winning the Grand Agg. Not too shabby for a fellow on the other side of 80!
Just my two cents worth of a report.
Gord
