Decent .308 rifle?

I would buy the 30-06 CZ 557 with iron sights and nice synthetic stock that Tenda has. Yes, it's not 308, but a great tool rifle. I own several and they're keepers. The best factory synthetic stocks of any rifle I have ever owned. I believe G4C has a super nice CZ 557 Lux Carbine in 243, but I guess you are looking for 30 Calibre. Good luck.

My usual go-to choices are Tikka T3X, Weatherby Vanguard, Bergara B-14 (currently on 2 T3X, 2 Vanguard, and 1 B-14 Wilderness, amongst others). All are fine shooters and I wouldn't hesitate to settle on any of them if I had to.

Id be looking at a CZ 557, Tikka T3, Weatherby Vanguard as my first options if on a budget. If not on a budget id be looking at a winchester m70, Ruger Hawkeye, or Ruger Scout that prophet river is selling at the moment.

Have a look at the Tikka T3X stainless (2nd choice), or a Kimber Hunter (1st choice) if you can find one.

Both are accurate, light, and moose weather resistant :)

I’d be looking for a Howa 1500 or Weatherby Vanguard if I was on a budget, lots of value to be had in them. Tikka or a Ruger Scout or certain models of Rem 700’s if I had the extra cash to spend.

+1 on the Howa/Weatherby the most underrated rifles in my opinion
Excellent hunting rifles especially with the blind magazine

Prophet River has a Remington 783 in .308 for a good price but I don't know if the Rem 783s are any good.

"Rem 783 any good?" - I bought a new 783 in 243 Win for my grandson (January 2020). After perhaps 100 to 150 rounds fired, he got a couple "mis-fires" - two rounds out of box of 50 that he tripped trigger multiple times - would not fire - evidence of firing pin mark on primers - both those rounds fired in my own Ruger 77 Compact on first try. So I replaced the main spring - I think I used a main spring for a short action Rem 700 - cut off a couple coils and heated last coil to red hot with torch - made it flat - rifle seems okay since then. That bolt dismantles about with your fingers - I found "how to do" on You-tube.

Through CGN, I bought a new, never fired Rem 783 take-off barrel in 308 Win - for when he wants "more power" - complete with barrel nut. I also have a barrel nut wrench and headspace gauges when he wants to make the swap - is / was a video on Brownell's website showing how to do that barrel swap.
