Being a new hunter I know very little.

I've heard about doe calls and the such, and am wondering what you guys would recommend this september.

I'm quite open, as I don't know anything other than what I've picked up on the internet.

They work great on coyotes...

I tried several before. Most deer run at the sound of them, but I did have a buck circle downwind of me with a rattlebag. So I have to say I was doubtful of rattling, that was the closet I've come to getting a genuine response from a deer.

HS True talker. Only use the grunt call when needed. If you catch the rut, you can call them right in. You have to remember, calls only work at certain times. I usually don't use them at all for deer, unless I see one and it is moving in the wrong direction. If you catch the rut, they work great. You have to judge the situation, use it or don't. That's all a part of gaining experience. Sometimes they work for you, and sometimes they can be your worst enemy. The True Talker is the only call I use though.

grunts

I've played with deer grunts a lot. Here's what I've seen.
1. a medium pitch grunt will stop does in their tracks. Same for coyotes. Haven't seen a response from a buck more than a head raise.
2. a deep pitch grunt will make a medium size buck drop it's head and skulk off quietly.
3. a higher pitch grunt seems to do absolutely nothing that I've seen.
4. tried 2 different brands, they both sounded quite close, and worked the same.
5. found this site, gonna play some more this fall: http://www.myoan.net/huntingart/deer_calls.html
6. I'm sure there's a way to make this work, with all the different responses I've seen, it seems to be a matter of not so much wether they work, but When to use what grunt.
Don't know if I'll ever get it figured out, but it's sure fun trying.
Biggest response we got was when son and I were hunting coyotes with a "fawn in distress" call. Accidentally called in a herd of about a dozen does, and they came right to us, I mean Right to us. We had to stand up so we wouldn't get stepped on, and we weren't in camo, just laying on the snow!
Have fun.

I have limited experience with calls, as I'm one step past newb deer hunter. I tried calls this year, a grunt type tube, and a fawn bawl/ distress(tip a can kind). The grunt didn't seem to do a thing for me, but I could have been calling wrong.

The fawn bawl seemed to work for me, or it was one hell of a coincidence. I had a spike buck come running in on me, like an excited dog looking for something.

This was opening day of the season in Sask. Took the better half hunting later in the season, set up low on a bushy fence line with a good view(except for one low area ) and tried grunting and the fawn bawl too.

We saw a deer out at 300-400 yards, moving quick, and both calls did nothing to bring him in. We waited til near end of legal light(probably 10 minutes to go) and decided to pack it in.

I stood up, and wiley coyote was walking towards us, you guessed it, in the low area. The gf passed me the rifle, and I popped him.

So take it for what it is.... YMMV

There are a lot of hunting videos out there with deer calling instruction. Get a couple and watch them a couple times. A good video is better than a book for learning this sort of thing.

If I leave to go hunting and realize down the road I have forgot a deer call, I'll go back home to get one or two. One time My wife and I were a couple hundred KM from home when I realized I didn't have one. She said "well we can stop at Canadian Tire on the way and you can get one. It turned out to be one of my favorite of the dozen or so that I have.
