Good for you. Except Louisiana isnt Ontario. Your point is hardly valid. Im discussing bush, not being in water. I dont see how they're related.

How do you suppose you're trotting your horse along through that? You wont be sneaking up on anything. Hunting here is all about

QUIETLY, slowly stalking

Waiting for deer to come for you (guys can sit for weeks on end in prime areas and not see anything like this)

Pushing the deer with either people or dogs

That pic would be the very best of what we have for open country. Our hunters would be fighting over watches that looked like that!

lol amen to that my friend. blastedsabre you have my 100% support in this debate but that picture does not show the true ontario "bush". its not unheard of to get closelined off of fourwheelers, snowmobiles, etc., and thats on our good trails. i will say that there is "open country" in ontario, and probably about 99% of it is water. sure you can take a 200 yard shot across a pond, but it will take well until after dark by the time you get around to that deer, gut it, and drag it out with your horse, wich probably will not even make it the whole way. you say you have no ontario experience well then listen to us that do and swallow your pride. watch an episode of man tracker that is featured in ontario. those horses do not leave the trails, as soon as the prey runs off the trail they can literraly stop and taunt man tracker because there is no possible way the horses can penetrate the bush. keep in mind this thread is about prefered deer dogs, not the ethnicity of using them. but if you want to talk ethnicity, spot and stalk, horseback, and long range hunting is ethical to you where you live. because that is the most effiecient way to hunt there. to us here in ontario this is not effiecient or sensible or even possible. we have to rely on still hunting, or dogging. to be honest iv never heard of horse back hunting in louisiana, but i have no "LOUISIANA EXPERIENCE", so i am not going to argue or doubt that one bit in my mind.

This is a typical bush in central Ontario. Mixed hardwood with lots of wet swampy areas. I really have no idea how you think a horse is going to be of benefit here. You wont be riding ahead of anyone, or sneaking along a trail, because they dont exist unless we make them. Hunters generally have a hard enough time of walking around without poking their eyes out, let alone riding something.

Almost everything in Ontario is shot under 100m. Its not because we're bad shots, its because YOU CANT SEE ANY FURTHER THEN THAT. I'd bet almost everything is shot under 50m for that reason actually.

Transmission lines for power generally run along the highway. So, ya, they arent very prolific throughout most of Ontario.

But whatever, continue to think you know what your talking about.

You hit the nail on the head. Excuse my brethern Albertain there seem to be a plague or disease of "Foot in Mouth/over opinionated/know it all" here in this province. This guy dosen't have a clue what it is to hunt deer in front of hounds or beagles and is really talking in cirlcles.
 
now if we can get back to the dog discussion i find the walkers to be skittish and very people shy. but i know lots of people that use them and swear by them. the main thing is to teach to run at a young age and run them with dogs that do good runs and come back so they can learn from the older dogs.
