Deer Gun Calibre

The 44 Magnum is chambered in the Marlin 1894, it is light, fairly inexpensive as new rifles go, and scoped up nicely (old tired eyes).

Sounds like you've already got the perfct short range deer gun! Have at it! My close range is a Ruger 77/44. You wont regret it, nice big hole with probably as little meat loss as you can get.

I second that. .243 with 80 to 100 gr bullet. No problems.

The most damage ive ever seen on a deer was with a .243. Demolished it and ruined a lot of meat.

Something slow like a 20 ga slug maybe? I am just guessing here. I have never shot or even seen a deer in my life. Shot lots of moose with 30/06 type calibers though.

I love 7.62x54R some people don't wanna lug a heavy rifle around in the bush, but with the abuse it takes I've got no issues scratching up my surplus rifle.
