I am planning to deer hunt for the first time this fall.

I got thinking today about the gut pile. Nobody in my house will eat the liver or kidneys so they would end up staying in the field. I had a thought today that I could keep the liver and kidneys, slice them up and dehydrate them and feed them as treats to my dog. Can I do the same to the lungs? If they aren't liquid after being shot. Any other organs I can do this with?

Just trying to use as much as possible.

This is all assuming I shoot one first year out....

Apparently deer livers from this area (Central ON) may contain naturally occurring cadmium.
This is something else worth considering.
 
I'm not a fan of deer so I make jerky out of the back straps and everything else edible gets turned into dog food.
 
Caribou heart and liver are excellent. Sometimes there would be tapeworm cysts in the liver.
Just tried some deer heart that a friend has cured and smoked. Outstanding.
 
For moose or caribou, I always keep the heart and liver for myself. Cut the heart in half, and stuff it like a chicken, and bake it in the oven, some good eatin' there. The liver, I soak it in milk for a minute and fry it with onions. I keep the kidneys and tongue but always give them away to people who like them. My father-in-law told me way back when food was scarce, they used to keep the lungs. Cut them up and boil them until it sinks, then fry it, he said it tasted similar to liver. Some people keep a bottle of blood when they gut a animal to make blood pudding.
 
I take the heart and liver, we make pâté from it. It's so damn tasty, is a waste to just leave it behind as it's highly edible and so good to eat. If we didn't enjoy it so much I would keep it and feed it to the dogs, cooked, raw or dehydrated. All would work as dog treats or food. Any trim that doesn't get ground up goes on top of the dogs reg food at meal times, they go nuts for it.

I give the tongue to a family member who likes to eat it as well, waste not want not!
 
I don't feel that leaving a pile behind is waste at all.

Would be wasteful if it was in your freezer and gets tossed out into the trash after being freezer burnt.

Nature will utilize all energy presented to it.

Not a waste as some other critter will eat it, a shame is what I should have said as its very edible or if the op doesn't like eating Heart or liver he very well can use it for dog food/treats. Dogs usually go wild over it.
 
Thanks everyone. I had not even thought of the heart and tongue. The lungs were the big one I was thinking about.

Someone had a valid point about parasites. If I dehydrate the freeze the organs would that kill any risk of parasites?
 
Freezing won't kill all parasites. However, there are plenty of dog sledders around these parts including a veterinarian. He often uses frozen wild animal parts including beaver, to feed his dogs. He says that freezing kills most of the nasties and doesn't worry about it.
 
Deer heart is excellent.
Deer tongue is ok, not really worth the trouble, tough, good if needed for survival..
Deer Liver is awful, i would never eat that, fry some up and see what you think, it is disgusting. I fed it to my dogs and they #### themselves for 4 days.
 
We found that Mule deer liver is great White tail not so much. Moose it depended on age and were it was taken some were ok but very strong others way to strong and not very tasty. It mostly boils down to what your taste is.
 
I've got to echo most of the rest to say we definitely save and eat the heart... it's excellent!

I feed my dog dehydrated beef lung that I buy but I've never tried to make any myself. Probably would be a nice treat for him though...


Although most of the time I'm aiming to liquify the lungs as best I can. ;-)
