deer hunting questions...

Close, but not quite. Its 500m UNLESS you have permission from the owner. If you have permission you can shoot from just outside the doorway. Hell we can probably even shoot from inside through an open door (unsure on that last bit - not recommended at any rate)

Lol she was even saying I could hunt from the barns second floor window as the deer are walking by and hanging out all the time. Im getting her to fill out the land owners permission form so that if the c.o's ever give me a problem im covered.

Well , I guess all you would need up there is a toaster oven and cappuccino machine to complete the hunting "shack" :p

I believe the other 2 are soy bean she said, I could be wrong what is winter wheat?

Winter wheat is wheat they plant in the fall and harvested in the winter. They are those golden fields you see in the winter. Ppl usually plant them after they cut the corn in early fall. It'll look like a dark field of green grass around Oct.

Winter wheat is seeded in the fall, and harvested earlier than the spring planted crops the next fall.Seeded in september, usually harvested in august. At least how it is in the western provinces..Similiar to fall rye..

You need to consider the prevailing winds before you decide on a stand location. You want to be upwind of the deer when you hunt. If the deer smell you, the gig is up.

In that area, even if they did smell you, probably would not make a difference. One spot I sit on is almost on the ground. I had 3 bucks walking all around me one day last year and they weren't spooked at all. Unfortunately, it was still 30mins before legal shooting light. By the time I could shoot, they had moved along thier way. One of them was quite big, or looked it in the dark...

Well the things I have found with Deer hunting in Ont. No rush to learn the deer this season. As crops mature and the season changes, so does the pattern of the deer. You will see this even from early spring to late fall. Before the rut, I find the deer stay in the cover of the bush. By the rut, you can see them anytime and anywere. After rut they retreat to the bush to recoupe, and then back to the fields to fatten up in late fall early winter.
Get a trail cam and set up around your blind/treestand, see if deer are using that area. And in early fall start baiting with cracked corn, mixed wheat, and apples. You will see all kinds of wildlife come to the feed if you put a trail cam by it.
Oh and pratice, pratice, pratice with that bow :)
You have a sweet spot, need a hunting buddy???

I find the soybean fields are good places to scout the bachelor groups of bucks during the summer months, something to do with protein content for antler growth (dont quote me). Just because a nice buck you see is there in the summer he may be a concession over come the rut.

One of the most valuable scouting tools if you don't have tons of time is a trail camera or two. As summer is winding down and fall approaches find the heavily used deer trails and then go 10-15 yards off them and look for a less used trail, that is usually what the bucks will run.

For stand location try to find a good bottle neck or choke point (where the bush narrows). I have been successful on field edges but it can make for some long shooting with a bow.

One thing I must mention and have learned the hard way many times is always play the wind. I own multiple stands for this reason.

Where abouts are you located, if you ever need a hand gutting or skinning and in my area I am more then willing to give a hand.

Don't over scout the place! I've screwed up so many spots by checking for deer. Get two or more game cameras and us them . Some sleeping pills in the apples might work. Probably not legal.

Good luck for putting up a tree stand in that tree? You better make sure the owner wants you to give it a brush cut.

Yea she doesn't care she said go nuts do what you need to do. She thought I was going to put up like a tree fort/tree house and pointed to a bunch of wood at the back and told me to help myself to whatever I wanted, I got really lucky with this place :)
