Well for those who have always wondered what would be left of a deer when it was shot with a 50 BMG at relatively close range, here is what to expect.
This years draws were not overly kind to me, but I did get drawn for mule deer doe out at the farm. This is imporatant to me because there is so much of the province that just does not have real good areas to safely shoot 50s, and to hunt with 1 poses its own set of logistical problems, like being absolutely certain of where 1s bullets will stop. The area I hunt deer is a series of coulees and draws where this is not an issue, unfortunately the treeain lends it self only to 700 yards or less. The deer I shot was a meagre 542 yards from me when I unleashed 13000 lbs of kinetic energy at her. The 750 grain heavy jacketed hollow point (legal hunting bullet) struch right on the sternum behind the front leg, the shot was a true broadside shot.
The bullet tore away about a 3" diameter patch of skin and a little meat and bone, the energy however hydrauliced the guts out at the thinner skinned area about where a navel should be on a deer.
In the pictures , which are VERY GRAPHIC and not suitable for all, especially those who are weak of stomach, there is a large amount of skin removed, I cut along where there was no attachment to the flesh, so 1 can see how much the skin ballooned from the shock. Very little meat is not useable, which is good, I have had more meat damage done with far lesser calibers.
So for those who have wondered, here is the answer.
