ive been rabbit hunting for a while and i want to get into deer hunting. what would be a good rifle for that and where could i get a good used one. thanks
There is nothing wrong with starting out with a 30-30 winchester or marlin for the type of hunting we have around here. Not usually many places where you get long shots, unless you are sitting on an open field. And those little lever actions are easy to manuver through thick brush if you like to stalk hunt.
As for where you can find a good used one pick up the bargain hunter I see a couple in there right now. Also have you tryed the army surplus store on Agricola street. He has some used rifles and also there is JD's shooting and fishing supplies in Prospect. Down towards Peggy's cove.
I'd recommend bolt action as well... .303 if you need a nice short range bush gun or a .308 for all occasions.. then you could also handle larger game if opportunity presented.
Another vote for the 30-30 or a 44 mag. Most shots are under 80 yards and the are easy to handle in the bush and fun to shoot. If you think you might try for a moose then I would look at the 30.06 or 308. JD's have some new and used ones, was there last week.
Most people that I see around here hunt deer with a .303 or a 30-30 and they work great in the bush that we have. You can pick up a decent rifle in either caliber at the places listed above for a decent price. Good luck with you hunt.
The hunting in NS is very similar to the hunting I do here in NB.
Sure ........ a 30/30 will cover alot of the hunting that you will encounter, but what do you do when you step out onto a clear cut and there's a nice buck on the other side at about 300yds and you're standing there with a 30/30 in your hand? May as well be holding a pointed stick.
Buy a lightweight 30-06/270/308 with a low variable powered scope and all your hunting needs will be covered, and that nice buck in the clear cut will be in your freezer.
I agree 200% with SuperCub. I started hunting four years ago is NS and went through all kind of rifles and finally ended up using a bolt action in 7x57. Lightweight is essential! Many rifle are available on the used market here or elsewhere. I find 7x57, 6.5x55 and 308 perfect for NS. With a bolt you have better ammo/bullet options especially when you reload. The good old Weaver 4x steel scope does the job!
I think you would find some good used rifles here:
Go to a range early enough and get familiar with your rifle! Plan your tracking early and do not go where everybody else goes. It can be busy on crown land.
I agree you could also add these to your list : Savage 99 in .300savage or .308
They might be harder to find nowadays though. But you never know, sometimes you stumble upon some lucky finds.
Keep your eyes on the Bargain hunter paper that comes out every wednesday.
ya i think light weight 30.06 is a good way to go i it's good for anything from small game to moose or elk. Id reccomend a tikka t3 there light and reasonably priced.
Just starting out deer hunting? A bolt action 308. Lots of rifles around in all price ranges, lots of ammo available everywhere, plenty of power for any deer, moose, or black bear.
