Deer killing gun...sks?

Hey guys! For Christmas the wife got me a russian sks with a Tapco t6 stock. I was hoping to be able to use it as a "fun gun" but also use it as a 150yard and less deer rifle. I spent some time reading up here and I see lots and lots of people saying how in-accurate the sks really is. Should I re-consider using it as a deer rifle? I was planning on a BC Tactical scope mount, and maybe an NC star Tac scope? Am I setting myself up for failure here? Im hoping if I keep it close range it shouldn't be a problem.

I shot my deer 2 years ago about 125 yards with a bone stock Siminov sks. Me and my buddy could hit paint cans and sometime coke cans at 150 at our outdoor range. The sks isn't near as inaccurate as people make it out to be. Just don't expect MOA at 300+.
 
You better believe its a deer killing gun. 7.62x39mm has the same ballistics as the 30-30, which has probably taken more deer in North America than any other cartridge.

pop cans at 150 no problem with my stock russain it will groop ok at 100 (about 3" with surplus if i do my part)

ive used mine on deer the way it is with iron sights
 
Shoot it first but for God's sake don't put an NC star on it. You couldn't pick a lower quality scope. There's cheap then there's NC star. They are the very definition of junk. The BC tac mount however is rock solid and a good choice. If your eyes are still good, a Bushnell TRS-25 is a good fit that allows the gas tube to be removed without removing the sight. Its about as small as it gets in a quality red dot and the 3 moa dot is an excellent fit for your purpose. But like I said shoot the rifle first and see if it will get the job done. The round will but each SKS shoots different. Be sure to use the same soft point ammo you'll be hunting with as its better quality than surplus ammo. MFS and Seller & Bellot make good stuff, MFS being usually half the price of S&B with throwaway steel casings.
 
I've heard stories of it being used successfully on moose at short range, and have no doubt it would make a clean ethical kill. The .30-30 can so the X39 can too. It gets quite a bit of use by black bear hunters but I would not recommend it for brown bear but I'm sure you meant blacks. Elk would be another close range proposition to keep things ethical.
 
Holy crap thanks alot for the advice guys!! I was considering maybe getting something with a 2x magnification, maybe up to 4x; instead of just a red dot. I was not aware NC Star was cheap-o-:bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug:. Thanks! Consider it scratched off my list!!! If I can find something that can stay attached while removing the gas tube that would be awesome. I believe going with the BC Tactical mount should be much more sturdy than just using the stock, correct?

I wouldn't hesitste to use my SKS for deer out to 100 yards anyways. With surplus ammo it is doing about 6 inch groups, and the last time I used hunting loads in it it was doing similar size groups, only lower of the surplus group.
 
AMAZING deer gun i took my first deer down with it i dont know wahts everyone else's problem but my SKS is SUPER accurate, more accurate than my .22 i must say... it is well put together and my deer DROPPED dead :) MFS soft point bullets are really good jsut saying for the hunting :)
 
i watched a show a while back it had these native looking guys shooting caribou with sks in siberia. It didnt say anything about range but it was in dense woods so I dont imagine it was that far but shows that people who need an absolute "survival/food gun" can and do depend on the sks

I've hit 4 inch round targets at 100 yards open sights with my brothers SKS. Use a hunting round and I'd say go for it.
 
It's hit or miss with some of the SKS and accuracy. Just because someones will drive tacks at 100 yards, doesn't mean yours will go any straighter than a slug from a 12 gauge. I've seen these first hand.
Firstly, test it with the hunting ammo you plan to use on a bench and offhand. Once the group opens up to 6-8" you found the high limit of what you want to throw at something living.
 
Has anyone used Prvi Partizan (Serbia) 7,62x39 123gr soft point ammo on deer? I recently picked up a box to try out. I've heard the S&B hunting ammo is good also.
 
Practice,practice,practice, with SP ammo of course.That being said my neighbors young lad took 2 deer this season with his.Both around the 100yrd range, one was a bang flop the other went 30yards if that.
