Deer Season 2020 Thread

There was s buck parade today..
Saw some 3 to 4 year olds , lots of spikes and formers..

There where 2 maybe 3 does in esteruse.. sure got those bucks moving..

The full moon will crest on the 30...
The rut on big time.

So, in post 136 I mentioned I “tagged” a buck with my truck early in the morning on the way to our hunt site. It was dark and when I got stopped and turned around I could not find any parts on the road or the deer ... so back home to get another truck and off again. Today, 4 days later, a buddy sends me this pic of a deer a farmer found dead near his corrals with these parts wrapped around its head. Explains the missing parts and deer.

Finally got the dominant white tail buck on the property this year. Had him on cams last year as a five year old. The .50 cal Traditions muzzleloader at 20 yards dropped him on the spot with 300 grain Hornady XTP and two white hot pellets. Gutted weight 215 pounds and 80 inches nose to tail. Estimated live weight 260 pounds. He scored in the low 140’s typical and had over 11 inches in deductions. Non typical he grossed 159. Great brows but relatively short beams and his inside spread was only 17.5”.

He came in 3 days in one week on the cams and I knew then that it was time to make it happen. First sit in the Cabela’s Zonz blind he came in late just after dark. Next day he showed just before sunset. Within 10 seconds of him coming into the clearing I raised the muzzle loader and pressed the trigger without even the slightest increase in heart beat.

Subordinate buck 2 or 3 year old. Had a couple of these come in this year. Not a shooter this year. Maybe in a couple years.

Awesome bucks guys,
we sure don't see them like that over here on the west side of the rockies.

They are definitely here, I have pics of them... Just not as much agricultural land to hunt them on so they are a lot harder to hunt in the thick stuff here... They also don't seem to have the same habits/patterns/routines as other places.

Who the hell hunts on farm land? Around here, every acre is posted. I hunt the crown lands, adjacent to the farmland. But I'm not out hunting fields. I go in the big bush where the bucks roam after the leave the fields.

Either way they are grain fed, so the antlers will be much bigger.

The bucks here in the East Kootenays migrate up and down the mountains depending on the time of year.
The Muley season here is closed on Nov 10, and the bigger bucks haven't moved down yet, the rut hasn't yet started.
So, if you want a big or even a legal buck, you will have to hike up the mountains.

This year I saw about 25 3x3 mule deer bucks, some of them nice sized, and I could have easily shot any of them,
but not one 4 point, which is the minimal legal requirement.

Oh they’re around, mature wt bucks are very elusive. Trying to find them is almost as much fun as shooting one, they’re crafty buggers. This guy would only show in the dead of night a few years back, even with apples and alfalfa out I only caught him eating once. He’d creep through stare right at my trail cam and disappear fast, I pretty much know where he hangs out but it’s a no go for a couple reasons. Have seen him last year just before last light as I was driving to a friends and man he’s a good looking buck.
