I think the .270 is probably the best round for the job you mentioned. The .243 will do, but right aways you'll have those who get up in arms over it's use. And admitidly it does spit a small bullet. The 7mm Remington is the same thing as a .270 Winchester out to 300 yards, and most folks don't shoot beyond that so it's extra power and recoil is unnecessary. Of the 3, the .270 fires a bullet heavy enough to allow it to overlap other uses. Varmints on the low end and elk/moose on the high end with relative ease and isn't as controversal in those other roles. :)

Out of the three listed the .270 Winchester is my pick.

On an unlimited basis however the .257 Roberts, 7mm-08 , and the 260 Remington would tie for first place.

Well my newfie friend......

I voted for the good old .270 WCF and here is why:

You can shoot a 130gr pill at 3100fps and shoot nice and flat out to 400yds with only 10" drop if you sight in at 3" high at 100yds. You can shoot a 140gr bullet at 3050fps and get the same thing with a little more weight, or you can shoot a good 150gr bullet at 2950fps and still be good and flat and hit everything like a 7mm Rem Mag.
The recoil is very moderate in a 7lb rifle and you can be guaranteed to find any rifle in it.
I have over 40 big game (no coyotes included) under my belt with the .270 WCF and the only cartridge like better is the .284 I own now and have never shot:D (I am content).

The .270 is like a night on George St. It is fast and fun, but if you do it right it won't cost you more than a pretty girl;)

I voted for .270 only cause of the great reviews and popularity this cartridge has given itself. Yeah I know Jack O'Connor carried one on most his hunts and swore by it's fantastic flat shooting and long range stopping power. My good buddy Hakx used his model 70 to "bang flop" a nice muley doe and swore by it's reputation..having said that, it's good enuf for me..so good I had to get one myself so I bought me a .270 Pro Hunter bbl for my Encore. Who needs a magnum for deer anyways. And save the .243 for yodel dogs..just my opinion!

Call me biased because I have a 270, but 270 all the way. 7mm rem mag is too much rip roaring power for just a deer. 243 is a bit low powered for my taste, but it still works.

Shoot a deer within 100 yards, and the only difference between them all will be how much your ears ring.

as my dad said about 40 years ago when I asked him if a certain rifle could kill a deer-''sure-if you hold it straight''.But as for long range capabilities-unless you are hunting in open country-the average shot is probably well under 100 yards-and a lot under 50 yards

270 shoots almost as flat as the 7mm while being chambered in usually a lighter rifle. More thump past 300 yards than a 243

Too many "it isnt about size but how you use it" arguments here. Buy a 7MM Sako and choose different bullet weights. The 7mm doesnt kick much more than a 30-06. If you wanna buy four rifles buy four 7mms:dancingbanana: I know I did.

I like the 270 ...it has such a variety of bullet weights and easily reloaded to hit its prime. more than enough "gun" for deer and very adequate for moose under 300 yards. It put down what I pointed it at and a lot less recoil than the larger loaded magnums. It is a lot nicer hunting if you do not have sore shoulders. Also a benefit.... the fact of destroying less meat.

Which rifle would you prefer for deer and why?
Advantages / Disadvantages

comments and info on calibres other then these three not required.

It's a deer...pull the trigger on any of those three guns and as long as the crosshairs on where they are supposed to be and gun goes bang, the deer will fall down. Give me the 7mm though.....then we can talk long range.

None! if I had to it would be the .270

why not a .25cal gun? or 6mm? to me these are both more ideal deer rounds then the ones listed above.....257wby being the prime deer cartridge....IMHO
