Defense against BEARS.

Methinks Canada needs to start up a Bengal Tiger breeding and release into the wild program to give us something else to worry about out in the woods. :D

Bears can be a lot easier to kill than these bear defense threads.
I would go with the shotgun as there is no gun quite as devastating as a shotgun at very close range. An Ithaca mag 10 with a short barrel and three loads of heavy shot can make quite a mess of a bear's face.
If that fails a good faith in god kuz nobody else is able to help you.

A Tavor would not be the ideal bear defence gun. A .223 is not a sufficient cartrige for bear.

As an interesting tangent, I was travelling with work in Kugaaruk last spring (Nunavut) and the taxi driver offered to sell me a polar bear skin. I wasn't interested, but asked what he shot it with. .223 was the answer. I was surprised and told him so, as I thought .223 was more for squirrels etc, maybe a small deer. His reply? "That's nothing, last year a guy shot one here with a 220 swift".

bear spray is only a deturant for a verry short period of time. After which it becomes an attractant. Some friends in a remote area on a canoe trip had a bear encounter while making breakfast.Yes bacon um. Any how they sprayed bear spray into its eyes from about 10' away. Bear stopped walking towards them and sat down. Shook its head for about 5 seconds them licked all the spray off of its face. The father had a can of that foaming hornet spray. When the bear continued towards them he sprayed the bear in the eyes with it. The bear yelped and cried for a second and buggered off never to be seen again. Bear spray might buy you a few seconds of time but really its crap. A well advertized (deturant) for bear, a nice little cash cow for the manufacturer who has outdoors people scared into buying a half assed product. I agree with the whole bear defence what if's getting really anoying. Do a search. There is lots here on it. Do some real research if you are planning on a remote outing. ANY firearm is better than a can of bear spray. Save that for all the city dewelers that make it to the bush one a year.( hey a bear has to eat too!!)

Bear spray and a Maverick 88 with short barrel stocked with some heavy-ass slugs. Not those regular light ones that bounce off of things.

Spray first. He'll either run, which is the most favorable outcome, or stop for a second to present a good shot.

These threads always make me laugh.

1) Pistol Grip = Fail
A pistol grip? Are you kidding me? You are only gonna get the change to get off a couple shots and they need to be very well placed.

2) To kill a large animal such as a bear you need penetration. To achieve the best penetration you need bullets with high sectional desnity. Regular slugs do not have what it takes.

Just how many campers and hikers get attacked by bears every year?

I'll tell you what. Let's sleep side by side in my tent, you with your full-stock .300 Eargesplitten Lautenboomer and me with my pistol-gripped Mossy. We'll see who can go from sacked out to pointed at a threat trying to enter the tent from the outside first. At that kind of range, you don't need to knock the eye out of a bird flying - you need quick pointing and hard hitting power with unbelievable tissue upset.

If I'm going for a walk, it's a different ballgame. But NOTHING - and I mean nothing (besides a handgun, and that's verboten) - maneuvers as fast as a pistol-grip 12 in a tent.

I have to admit, I find some of the details in the above account hard to believe, especially the five slugs in the brain. Does anyone know where the original account is?

I believe it look up the story of old groaner.

What ever you carry for "bear" defence it really doesn't matter if you get attacked. If you don't hit the brain spinal cord you've got problems. I remember reading a guy used a 22 hornet to kill a grizz his first shot penetrated the skull killing the bear. A common myth is that a bear skull is extremely tough it is not. Slugs have penetrated and blew off half of a grizzlies skull, but if you miss the brain it will continue on.(One bear lost its lower jaw from a slug with an exit hole out of back of neck and went on to kill the shooter) One type of firearm that I wouldn't want to have at close range is any 300 or smaller magnum. Best bet is to just constantly be aware of your surroundings when in bear country. Use a flare gun if you encounter a bear that doesn't run away if that doesn't work shoot the bastard. What ever you do don't let it get too close those things can move. I remember one incident I was involved in. A grizz sow with two cubs was 3/4 up this approx 2000 ft mountain I was at the bottom right beside the truck door. One of my co workers had the bright idea to get closer. He didn't take more than 4 steps before she started her charge(they're slower down hill then up) by the time he got to the truck door she stopped her charge and was probably about 150m away from us! There not an animal you want to take chances with.

I would say the best things to carry to fend of a bear attack would be:

a large caliber rifle 30-06 or larger
flare gun
hand axe
