Defense against BEARS.

Note: these tactics are reserved for when your fire arm has not availed you, or for use with your firearm. I would not use these tactics as my stand alone defense.

You could have saved a lot of wear and tear on your flamesuit if you'd just said that in the first place ;)

When tenting in the bush, I keep my shotty beside me, with my knife. Handy for making back doors.
Then I put in the earplugs and pass out. No sense worrying.

My choice is a nice 12 ga pump gun loaded with 3" slugs, WITHOUT the magazine plug (7+1). I'll worry about the mag limits laws later.:D

If its a pump, and its for defense, or target shooting only, there is no limit. unless your hunting, then there may be regulations. Semi auto shotguns however are limited to the typical 5 shots. Almost all manual action rifles are unlimited in there ammo capacity. However so few actually take full advantage of this. most that do are tubular fed magazines.

God I wish remington would release a quality 10 or 15 shot mag for their Mod. 7600 pump rifle.:(

Even when hunting, it's only for gamebirds that the 'plug' applies (with the exception of semi's, as you've said).

Hell, 9+1 in a pump with slugs is good to go... then ghostload for 9+2! 7+1 is nothing! :p

I'll tell you what. Let's sleep side by side in my tent, you with your full-stock .300 Eargesplitten Lautenboomer and me with my pistol-gripped Mossy. We'll see who can go from sacked out to pointed at a threat trying to enter the tent from the outside first. At that kind of range, you don't need to knock the eye out of a bird flying - you need quick pointing and hard hitting power with unbelievable tissue upset.

If I'm going for a walk, it's a different ballgame. But NOTHING - and I mean nothing (besides a handgun, and that's verboten) - maneuvers as fast as a pistol-grip 12 in a tent.

Sorry but I still don't agree. And I wouldnt be carrying a 24 inch barreled magnum caliber either. But a 16-18 inch big bore lever in my opinion is the way to go. There are plenty of what some would call experts that agree that the thick muscle and massive bone structure of a grizzly is alot for a sof lead slug to penetrate. Like I said sectional density.

I really dont think you can beat Camp Cooks 45/70 time and accuracy with your slug gun, and right now he has my attention with the 45/70 he shoots.

For now I will agree to disagree, but Im definetily not sleeping in any tents with you. LOL

Hmmmm, if you can't get it done in 4 rds mr.bruin will be chewing on your behonkas anyway.
I do forage crop inspections in bear and cat country and have been carrying an 870 Rem with 4 rifled slugs when walking the more remote fields. This yr I'm going to switch to one of my International Harvester Garands (kind of apropos for ag work) with 165gr Sierra HPBT handloads. I just hope there are no Nazi or Jap bears and cougars out there who know that it's safe to charge after they hear the "pling" of the empty clip being ejected.;)

Just bounce an empty clip off a rock and wait with a full clip in the rifle. :D

I dont think that really works, they would know you just bounced it when they hear a ping that was not proceeded by a gunshot. I.E instead of BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG ping*...:D it would just be...ping*...

And for zombies - don't forget zombies...;)

With the flare gun, don't forget to throw a shot of Courvoisier in his face first.

Seriously dude - "hand axe"???

I'm not sayin thats what I carry out in the bush or that I'm bear paranoid, but if I was ever in that situation that is what I would want.

Why

Bears for the most part hate fire thats why I would want a flare gun. Fire a shot just in front of him. My way of telling him to piss off without hurting him, and potentially triggering an attack from a safe distance.

If he doesn't get what I'm trying to say and continues to move forward he is gonna eat lead.

If I am actually able to kill him great if not I would want an axe.

Why because thats what natives used along with spears to hunt those beast back before the 30-06 or the 30-30 they would stalk up on a bear den cut a hole in the top of it when a bear poke its head out wham!

Or I could tell you the story of a 16 year old native in the 50's hunting bear with his dogs. He came up to a den poke his rifle in the den to see if anyone was home. A grizz swiped his rifle from his hands. Then as the bear was coming out of the den and he cut the bears skull in half with his axe. Thats why I would want a hand axe. Because even if your able to get 4 heart lung shots on a bear there is still a chance it can kill your ass.

I've read and heard that buckshot is useless. Personal experience seems to indicate same.

1. Bangers
2. Spray
3. Slugs or some rifle .308 or bigger.

Who the hell runs into bears so often? I've seen many and most of the time wasn't armed. Even that moron took years hanging around grizzlies until he got eaten by one. If you're working in bear country I can see being careful, but the average walk in the woods seems hardly worth worrying about.

I'll bet there's a huge distortion in statistical probability here, but it seems to sell guns.

I choose an ATC for an M30 grenade launcher. You might only get one good shot anyhow, and it would be a heck of a lot of fun the other 99.998% of the time. :D

I rather have a big knife for a bear.. sure it will probly kill me but with a nice big knife hes going to get it too... I rather just avoid bears and take steps not to bump into them... Ive been around lots of black bears and few grizzlys they seem to not even care that your around.. I think the key is not being scared of them and giveing them space and if they come to close make noise ect... with a grizzly being agressive may cause an attack so playing dead with them is a ok bet might work might not.. but with a black bear fight like hell..

Knifes dont jam or run out of bullets.. I mean you can have 100 rds and if you miss every shot you screwed... its about not panicing and waiting till you get a good shot.. now this the bullet will bonce off the head stuff.. doesnt always happen that way..

Then as the bear was coming out of the den and he cut the bears skull in half with his axe.

Heres a few links to some of the most popular tomahawks in use today. the American Tomahawk - Lagana VTAC is currently the highest quality, Useing hight carbon steel and a Polymer synthetic handle, this ones the strongest by far, its used by current U.S. army rangers in both war zones of today. $130
The Cold Steel Vietnam tomahawk is the exact same tomahawk,(American Tomahawk is a division of Cold Steel) except with a hickory handle. which cuts the price in half.$60.
The SOG is a sort of cool looking alternative to the original Vietnam Ranger style, its longer heavier but made of weaker stainless steel with a fiberglass synthetic handle. also $60.

But all these companies have a large variety of other tomahawks and such, to choose from. Both can be found in canada if you can find a retailer.

-3. If you would rather fight a bear with your hands on land than attempt to drown it in water, be my guest. But its a fact that lower life forms have difficulty performing more than one or two tasks at a time, often if they are swimming (or climbing), that’s a big task for four legged animals. So that is all they can effectively focus on, which demotes their fighting prowess, because that pair of actions likely just never happen to them in the course of their lives. For instance: As vicious as a dog can be on land, they are useless in the water. their is no reason a bear could not possibly be the same, after all the only time you see them fighting in water, is when they are fishing in shallow water, or no more than two steps from it.
Sure this is just a theory, but if nothing else its better than fighting it on land where its proven it’s self the victor time and time again.
.

Have you considered the possibility that you are a lower life form, in water??
Last I checked you or I cannot walk on water.
And you ever see a pissed off cat in the bath, if thats a handfull I'm sure a PO'ed bear will be a cake walk.
Again, thanks.

Question for the use a knife against a Bear folks...

Armed with a knife would you take on Mike Tyson? :D

Daniel boone did it all the time, but he stuck the knife between his teeth and stared the bear down:). I just use either my 1895gs or my defender with slugs.
