Am I the only modest newbie here???

My wish list:

- .22LR Savage Mark II F (bolt action, iron sights, ext. mag.)
- .17 HMR Savage 93R17 FV (bolt action, ext. mag, I'll add a decent scope)
- 91/30 Mosin Nagant (Internal mag., bolt action, iron sights)
- SKS Russian (semi-auto, clip fed, hinged floor plate, iron sights)
- Tokarev TT-33 (single action pistol)
- Remington 870 Express (high capacity pump action 12 gauge)

I've done plenty of research, I think my list is the best for a beginner. It's very recommended to start with a .22LR bolt action with iron sights. In general, iron sights make a better marksman in the long-term, as opposed to a scope or red dot. You learn to hold and discharge a rifle properly when looking through iron sights, the bolt would teach proper recovery and composure. All these firearms are relatively inexpensive and functional. Ammunition is fairly inexpensive for the majority of these firearms.

Cheers,
Sand

Ah, I remember when I was in the same position as you guys like it was yesterday. I have now gone through the wishlist, and bought and sold quite a few guns. It's been not even 2 years and the search continues. Do yourself a favour and don't worry so much about the perfect gun. Just buy it and try it. You will find out what you really like and it may be different them you initially thought. I was all about handguns and at first only joined an indoor handgun club. Now I find I'm leaving the restricteds at home alot of the time. You can waste your time listening to opinions but they are like a**holes. At this point I would say I have never bought a gun. I just rent them! You never lose too much money on a gun and you will find a few keepers on the way. Just to ilustrate my point:

Bought:
Ruger GP100
CZ 75 - 9mm (w/kadet .22lr kit)
Mossberg Maverick 88 - 12ga
Savage 11fcxp - .308
Cooey 600 - .22lr
Ruger SR9
Cz 858 t2
Glock 17
Backpacker single shot 12ga
Cooey 84 single shot 12ga
Remington 597 vtr
Ruger Redhawk - .44 mag
Byshmaster Carbon 15 - 9mm
Stevens 200 - .270 win
Stevens 200 - .223 rem
Marlin 1894 - .44 mag
Marlin 336c - 30/30
Ruger 10/22 Target Tactical

Still Have:
Ruger 10/22 Target Tactical
Glock 17
Ruger Redhawk
Stevens 200 - .223
Marlin 336 - 30/30
Mossberg Maverick 88

Thats about a gun a month!!!!!
I would say I'm pretty happy with the current collection, but I am considering selling the Redhawk as it is expensive to feed and I really don't use it for much but putting a smile on my face. It is fun with noobs though. Everyones face lights up when they feel that thing for the first time. Like I said just keep buying and selling. You may find your tastes change as you learn more. I used to be all about tacticool now I find my lever action and scoped rifles get the most play. Even the .22!

Cheers
Mark

"...Am I the only one who..." You don't have to be new. My list is long and expensive. Mind you, it's an "I need" list. The wishing part has to do with having the money and an end to the registry nonsense.
A pair of consecutively numbered Ruger Vaqueros, a double rifle, a Thompson SMG, the BAR I should have bought long ago despite not being able to spend the money, a vintage Brown Bess, a Johnson rifle, a 1903A3(have an 'A4). The list goes on and on.

I'm not exactly a newbie around here, but I didn't know this forum was even here until a few days ago. I've been hiding out on Milsurp for some time now, when I haven't been lost at sea with Bjarni Herjolfsson.

What I want right now includes
.280 Ross with a good barrel (the rest can be toast)
a Werndl
several bricks of ammo for my dear old Cooey Canuck. It eats .25 Stevens.

If I really had my druthers, I would add
MP-40
PPS
brass-jacket Maxim

but I live in a Free Country.

I can't do that.

I think back to when I was new into this sport, which is about 25 years ago now (How the frick did I get so old???).

I can't even remember what I wanted so bad I could taste it, back before I had anything, BUT, I was just going to suggest that your firearms want list will almost undoubtedly be a work in progress: As you shoot the ones you've bought, you'll find limits or surprises, and you'll sell or trade for something new, and so on, and so on...

Just make sure that you don't end up playing the stock market in reverse, especially if you are youngish, and funds are at a premium: Don't rush out and buy something new, unless you've tried one already and KNOW it works for you. It is quite expensive to buy something, not like it, trade it in at a loss, then try something else.

I would really recommend test driving first, then try to buy used, THEN if you still like that firearm 5 years down the road, THEN go buy a new one of the same model.

But - Have fun, anyway!

I think I changed my handgun choice this weekend ... I picked up a CZ75 and it sang to me .... I'm going to try it out this week - but I think it might have replaced the G17 as my first choice...

Reasonable and will have within a year:
SKS
AR-7
Bolt Action in .243 .308 or something similar

Reasonable
M305
M1 Garand
870
VZ 858

When I get a much better job
Tavor
XCR
50 BMG

Well I really am a Newbie Just got My licence a month ago or so and had my first day of shooting yesterday. I was lucky to have a few rifles given to me from my uncle. (lakefeild mossberg .22lr, cooey .22lr, savage 30-30/20 gauge over under, Eddystone mode1917 30-06??)

But my first purchase was the Mossberg 500 roadblocker (say what you want... maybe I play to much video games or have a zombiephobia :p) After shooting its really not the funnest gun I acctually prefer the 2 bolt action .22 but I still think it looks cool and am happy to have it just for other peoples reactions.

The next 2 on my wishlist are:

Ruger 10/22 not sure if i want the Sporter or the Target. Possible the SR-22 but it is quite a bit more expencive.

SKS. I think for the affordibilty and the fact that I can get surplus ammo it should be a lot of fun for not alot of $$$.

I am open to hear what some not so newbies think about my next 2 on my wishlist.

OK I'll play too.

SKS - of course
Mossberg 500
Some sort of bolt .308 with a nice scope
S&W M&P 40 - I have it in .177 and I love the feel of it
Ruger Super Blackhawk .44mag - Looking at trying for ATC for work to keep the bears and cougars in check.

Well, I've only been licenced for about a year and a half, and I've already gotten a good number of the guns on my want list. So far I've gotten:

Norinco M-14S
Ruger 10/22
S&W model 19-5
Walther P-38
Beretta Neos U22
Ithaca 1911A1
Remington 870 Tactical

Now I haven't gotten any guns in the last few months, but I'm still interested in eventually getting in the next few years:

Rifles
CZ 858-2 Tactical
Benelli MR1
H&K SL8
SAFN 49
M1 Carbine
M1 Garand
AR-15
Lee Enfield No.4

Pistol Caliber Carbines
Beretta CX4 Storm
Thureon Carbine
Hi-Point 995TS

######## Sten Mk II

Handguns
Norinco Tokarev
Browning Hi-Power
Ruger Charger

Shotguns
Akdal MKA1919
Dominion Arms Grizzly 8.5" mag fed
