IIRC it was not unusual for the military guns to come two-tone, so why not the civilian ones? (just asking)

... A Colt collector down south on Gunboards Collector Forum told me the early SP1s with the greyer shaded uppers were leftover uppers from the USAF X1M16E contract .. they were the first branch of the military to adopt the AR15 type rifle, the USAF X1M16E had no forward assist or shell deflector and was semi auto only. they then switched to a forward assist upper and there were many uppers with no forward assist left over that they used on the commercial SP1 .
