Dent on primer? Is it safe?

So I was reloading my 30-30 with the lee handloader primer, and one primer didn't fit properly and made a small dent. Is it safe to reload it, or should I dispose the cartridge?

It's a CCI primer. I might sound naive to ask this, but are federal primer actualy that sensible?

Sensible? I have no idea.

However,

Federal primers are known to be much more sensitive than other brands. You will notice that their packaging is much larger than other brands, and it's not because they like spending extra money on packaging.

That's funny, I didn't realize I wrote sensible.

Good to know about the federal primers, I think I will avoid them.

You don't have to avoid them, just make sure you have a blast proof shield in front of your testicles when you're reloading with them.

FML, 80% of the reloading I do is with Federal primers, they are fine, I've never had one go off when it wasn't supposed to. I've dented them as you have in your photo, I've deprimed live Federal primers and I'm still here to talk about it.

i hate federal primers, but because of their MASSIVE packaging, not good for bulk storage. CCI and S&B are my top choices then winchester then federal, however i have a few bricks for my guns that have light strikes (586, tanfoglio).

i have had 2 primers go off in front of me accidentally (using a lee classic loader that uses a mallet) and outside of a nice adrenaline rush, no big deal or damage done.

Federal are more sensitive. This is a good thing to know. If you have a revolver or striker pistol that misfires, switch to federal. I have two revolvers and two pistols that only work 100% if I use Federal.

:agree:

...and as such, I tend to use mostly Federal primers.
I even decapped a few scores and re-used them afterwards.
they fire on time all the time.

Instructions that came with my Lee press said to avoid Federal primers. This is one of the presses where the primers are fed from a little ski jump like feeder and the one being encased is only half a head away from the others in the chain. Presumably a popped primer would possibly set off some others and make for a bigger mess.

I suspect that this is why my Dillon 550 has that primer delivery shuttle that moves the primer to be loaded well away from the stack in the holding tube.

I am so curious about this I think I will try it. I guess it will act like a blank round.

Pretty much, it will foul your barrel pretty good though. Also the primer will push out of the case because there is no force to push the primer back into the case. When there is a bullet in the barrel it helps generate pressure from the powder burning and pushes the case against the bolt face reseating the primer.

I have some 38spl brass I have drilled the flash hole bigger to reduce the primer coming out so I can shoot glue gun bullets for a larf. But I will never reuse the brass for real loads.
