My brother (Dave_D) ended up buying a Derya DY-BA 9mm bolt action, so I probably won't be getting one myself since I have access to his.

We got it out for its first range trip today and thought I'd share our initial impressions for anyone who's considering one.

He mounted a Firefield 1-6x24 scope, and we started sighting it in with Federal 115gr FMJ. To be honest, we could barely keep it on a sheet of paper and were starting to wonder what was going on. We switched over to Sellier & Bellot 115gr, and the difference was immediate. The rifle settled right down and was consistently shooting 2–3" groups at 50 yards. We also tried CCI 124gr, which grouped a little larger than the S&B but was still perfectly acceptable.

One thing we did notice was some minor feeding issues. It happened with both the factory Glock-pattern magazines and Magpul Glock magazines. It almost seemed like the rounds were presenting too high and occasionally wanted to nose up during feeding. It wasn't constant, and it may very well improve as the rifle breaks in, but it's something to be aware of. For casual bench shooting it was only a minor annoyance, but if you were planning to use it for action-style shooting, it could be more of a concern until sorted out.

A couple of other observations: the magazines are a pretty tight fit in the magwell, and the magazine release feels a bit flimsy. A release more like the one on the Henry Homesteader would have been a nice touch.

Overall though, we both came away impressed. The rifle looks great, feels well put together, and was genuinely enjoyable to shoot. As long as you keep in mind that it seems to be a little ammo-sensitive and may need some break-in regarding feeding, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who's been on the fence about buying one.

Curious if you went back to the federal again and tried it after the S&B, seems odd that much of a difference between the two, If it was the rifles first shots it could have been taking the rough edges off the rifling and became better after more was ran down the barrel.

It was still bad. I think I have a couple more boxes of it. Will try again I’m sure.

I can't bring myself to add another cartridge to stock, for anyone who already has a 9mm its really a no brainer to grab one of the available carbines.

What’s the ejection like on the bolt action?
Some of the pump actions have weak ejection
Mine sometimes spits them out ok then other times it won’t
I noticed that the action sometimes unlocks after firing if your not holding the pump forward firmly and that may be causing the issue for me

Wasn’t paying to close attention to that. Wasn’t spitting them to far as you can see on bench. But didn’t have any that didn’t eject.
Thank you for the range report, much appreciated.....:)

Unfortunately the issues you are having are enough for me to say no thanks.....:(

For $700.00, I would expect a firearm to have no issues, and with much better accuracy. If this is acceptable after spending $700.00 for a rifle, I guess my expectations are too high.....:(

Nice to finally get a report on these guns. Thanks again my friend!.......:)

The expectations from most. From what I’ve seen on cgn is way to high for these. I wasn’t expecting moa. So I’m not disappointed. The feed issue is what it is. I’ll have to keep trying it. Maybe it’ll sort itself out.
For me. The mag release is the worst part. I could sand the mags so they slide in and out better. And that would help with the pressure on the release. But for what it is and how I’m using it it’s manageable.

I agree with your sentiments. However $700.00 would feed some families for two weeks. I would think and expect that rifle to at least cycle, feed, function, and shoot without issues. Now maybe you just got a bad specimen, but it's not worth the gamble in my opinion only.

The accuracy wasn't great either, however straight wall cases can be inherently inaccurate on some platforms......:(

I'm glad you like it, and enjoy it...:)

For me, it's a definite pass.......:(

Sample size of one...but enough for me to keep my credit card in my wallet until more reviews get posted.
Thanks for your detailed review though.
Maybe Derya will address the mag release, mag positioning and mag tightness in the magwell as running changes.
As far as accuracy, 9mm as a pistol cartridge will never be super accurate. As a reloader I tried every combo under the sun in my 9mm semi's and while some much better than others, nothing really outstanding especially past 50 yards.

I received my 12" bolt today. Mags slide in and out easily. The mag release is kind of unusual for sure but it seems to work well on my example. I haven't checked feeding or ejection yet, hopefully later this week I'll head to the range. Trigger isn't great, hopefully it's adjustable. Overall I think it's pretty decently well made. The machining seems pretty good although I haven't completely taken it apart yet.

I do wish it came with a thread protector for the muzzle. I don't want the ridiculous flash hider on it but I also don't want to leave the threads exposed. At least it's standard 1/2x28 so it should be easy enough to source something to thread on there.

One thing I found neat was you can remove the recoil pad by removing the rear sling mount and use the hollow stock as a storage compartment. I don't think I'll put anything in there but maybe others would have a use for that. Looks like a single bolt attaches the buttstock to the receiver so it should be easy to swap it out with wood or other options if they become available in the future.

I have a pile of Glock mags. All sorts of brands and styles. All of them fit nicely in my Derya except for 2. They are original Glock double stack 10 round mags. The first one I put in went in and out a little stiff and the second one even worse. In fact, I had trouble getting it out and the mag well left a gouge in the side of it. You can see these mags don't have a "relief" cut along the back side compared to all my other Glock or Glock style mags. Looking into the Derya mag well there is actually a raised ridge on one side that isn't machined off completely when they did the radius cut.

This could be easily fixed if a person wanted to but of course you would damage the finish on the aluminum. I have enough mags that I won't bother filing it down and instead just use other mags.

First pic shows the gouge left by the Derya mag well on the Glock double stack 10 and next to it is a PMAG with the relief cut along the back that slides in effortlessly. The following pics show the problem area.

In the photo with the failure to feed, it looks like the magazine isn’t seated properly, you can see the mag catch/release sticking out where it locks in on the magazine catch “Notches” on the mag, you should hear an audible click when you seat the mag, also with the bolt open make sure you’re not over inserting the mags.
