Desert Eagle

I'm glad to hear of the bad side of it as well. However, a lot of the reliability issues are reportedly due to, as has been mentioned already, mild loads and lead bullets as well as a dirty gun.

The trigger complaint is valid. I too was surprised by the suckiness (it's a real word, Websters just doesn't know it yet :p) of the trigger action.

I am concerned about this report of cases getting scrapped. I noticed no such damage on the 10 rounds my buddy and I fired, but then again I wasn't really looking at the cases to begin with....

On top of the reasons above for reliabilty problems, another one is the shooters habit of "limp wristing". Most FTE etc come from the operator not doing his part from what i have found. I own a very early model that i have had for over 20 years and i can count on one hand how many stovepipes or even having the slide not return all the way to battery. That said, I have had a lot of first time shooters etc have nothing but issues with it. Maybe it just doesn't like being handled by anyone else :p.

The necessity of jacketted bullets, is my biggest reason for not wanting one. Every gun costs $$$ to get into your hands, but once in my hands, I like to keep them running for as little $$$ as possible. My Super Blackhawk runs the same hot H110 loads as a DE, but I can use cast lead bullets, and be reloading a whole cartridge (powder, primer and bullet) for way less than the price of a jacketted bullet.

Funny, I started reloading 4 months ago and wouldn't run lead bullets thru any of my guns. I abhor scrubbing barrels after shooting lead bullets. Jacketed all the way, baby! ;)

got 1 from santa 15 years ago . changed the springs out so i can shoot reloads no issues . p.s. jacket style bullets only . real head turner at range , hoot too shoot

How big are your hands? Shot a grip modified(by Cylinder and Slide, as I recall. They removed some of the grip and it was still a great big beast) .44 DE, long ago, at Second Chance. DE's were new then. Biggest friggin' pistol I've ever shot. Didn't come close to fitting my hand. Comfortable to shoot, but huge.
If it fits your hand, go with the .44 just for the ease of getting ammo.

Size and strenght should not be a problem,i am also thinking .44.I like the chromed look but gotta find out more on how they hold up,i suspect they hold thier look for a very long time like most high quality guns.

Welcome to the obsession, Pete! :) I'm glad you're enjoying your new addition. I will wear my shades when I see you pull that shiny beast out at the club. :) Now don't be bouncing that beauty off of the motor for the target system.

I only fired 5 rounds from mine before purchasing it, but the recoil (with American Eagle JHP's) felt tamer than that of a 44 Mag revolver.

Yup, mild compared to revolver rounds. The gas system and slide take a lot of the fun away as compared to a round gun. Especially those big Bubba full H110 loads. :p

You can take two identical DE's and they won't like the same ammo. You have to find one that yours likes best, reloaded or factory.

I don't know about yours but they are hard on brass. The extractor likes to chew on the rim a lot. That's why I keep cra**y brass for the chicken and save my new or only revolver fired once fired for the revolvers. They last almost forever in a round gun.

Well, I for one have to argue. With the right load, lube, sizer die and lead alloy, I never get any leading in any of my guns, except for the 9mm which is minimal. Copper jacket and plated I get regular amounts of copper color fouling in the barrels (ie same amount as other peoples). My bullet lube works great so all I have to do is run some varsol/mineral spirits/paint thinner thru the barrel and it's clean (again the 9mm being the exception). Of course the only gun I don't run lead through is the DE but I still shoot the occassional LSWC through it.

I love mine. I've shot a few hundred rounds through it so far and it's worked perfectly. I have had friends get hit with brass from time to time. Limpwristing!

Big flames with reloads.

MedicStimpy, I tried to pm you but don't seem to be able to. Is it possible you removed that from your options list? If this was done on purpose, could you then send me an email at peter2772000@yahoo.com

Thanks

Yep, Gold Titanium Nitride. The same stuff they use on drill bits. It's a very hard coating, my gun doesn't have a scratch on it. Even where the slide contacts the frame. All that sliding back and forth and no scratches. Amazing.

How much did that set you back, Merc? Dunno if I'd do it to my DE, but I have a couple of guns that I think'd look cool in that finish...

Pete... sorry, Dude. Email on the way. :)

I have a .44 Eagle XIX in black, upgraded target sights, 2 mags and all orriginal paper work and box for sale. I had 3 Eagles and have sold the other 2 only because I am getting out of the hand gun part of the sport. The 3 Eagles I had worked flawlessly if you shoot jacketed ammo, keep them clean and use springs designed for the loads you shoot. The factory springs are designed for performance loads whether they are factory or relaods. If you choose to shoot lighter target loads then they springs need to be changed to suit the load it's that simple. You will hear all kinds of stories about reloads for the .50AE and that the gun does not like reloads but I can tell you from personal experience that is NOT true. I have fired hundreds of .50AE reloads and not one misfire, stove pipe or ejection issue, but you have to use quality components same for the other 2 Eagles. It's simple, match the springs to the load and thses babies will shoot anything of good quality. As for the cost of jacketed v lead bullets that to is simple, if you can't afford the bullets, you can't afford the gun. Jacketed or nothing because lead will kill your Eagle.

my eagle is a first generation had it from new, its fussy even with factory loads in will run sampson factory flawlessly most others not so much I mesured the brass and found that the sampson brass is shorter that all the others, accually close to 44 special. but any reloads i trim the brass down to the sampson lengh and few problems

I almost came close to buying a DE... At first I wanted the .50 but I don't reload so the pain of finding rounds was not worth it to me. I then contemplated the .44 and I was almost sold until I started asking around and a few owners said you have to work up some good loads for the .44 because the factory rounds aren't hot enough to cycle... Thus ended my urge.....
