Desert Tech SRS Owners - advice needed - SRS A1 or Covert?

A question for you (actual, not wanna-be) Desert Tech SRS owners out there:

1. If you had to make the purchase decision all over again, would you go with the full-length SRS A1 or with the Covert?

2. The Desert Tech site states that all of the barrel conversions (including the 26" .338 LM) fit both the SRS A1 and the Covert. Have any Covert owners experienced any issues with the longer barrels?

3. For longer-range shooting (600m +) from a bench and from prone position, are there any functional drawbacks to the shorter Covert chassis? Is the bipod placement too close? The Desert Tech site states that the length-of-pull is identical with the same number of spacers in the buttpad - is this true? Any other issues to consider.

Thanks! I've always found the CGN Forums to be a great source of pragmatic information, and has helped me to avoid the subtle "gotchas" before I pull the trigger (figuratively) on a new purchase.

Is the bipod placement too close?

The further forward you can put your bipod the better it will be for stability when shooting. The short DT covert chasis is a limitation to this rule of thumb. If your requirements include working in, and potentially shooting from confined spaces such as vehicles and helicopters then the covert will shine for you.

One time I wished I got the covert was when shooting thru a 45 degree cutout. I couldn't get my barrel into the cut out due to the full length handguard.
Its not really that big of a deal, get what you like and go from there. You can always "upgrade" the hand guard to covert or full length by just purchasing a new handguard.

Not to hijack the thread but I just purchased a Desert Tech DTA SRS-A1 in .308 but I am having difficulties in deciding on what optic to mount on it. Any suggestions?
What are you guys using?

Yep will be a year in a month, had a sb before the TT I sold the sb, glass is a bright white vs cool white (brown tint) of the sb. No dealers stock it but reliable gun is a dealer.

Okay, Thanks.
I will have to talk to them about it when I go pick up my DT SRS on Thursday. Damn thing costs as much as the rifle but it looks like it might be worth it.

See you picked up a HS 50. Still getting the SRS?
Can't wait to try out mine.

The HS50 and the SRS were both on my "project list". Great deal on the HS 50...couldn't pass it up. Will start saving for the SRS now and will comb through the safe to see what can go. I have some reloading equipment and scopes that can go up on the EE, so should be able to pick up the SRS before spring.

So far, I'm leaning toward the A1 over the covert primarily for bipod stability, but must admit that a covert in .308 fascinates me as well. I also will likely start with a .308 version as I have all of the precision handloading gear for it, but then will also likely pick up a 6.5 Creedmore or 6.5x47 Lapua conversion kit. Glass will be my S&B 12-50 PM in a Sphur mount as I really like the idea of putting high-end glass on a chassis and leaving it there while switching barrels - makes a lot of sense to me.

Will also keep my eyes peeled on the EE over the winter for a reasonably-priced chassis (Covert or A1) to start off...

I have actually owned both. I still have the full length and I personally like it better. If I could use a suppressor I would want the covert. A covert will limit you optics selection as some scopes will stick out over the end of the barrel. I also found it harder to get into supported positions. The balance was great on both, the covert was lighter obviously.
I kinda wish I could get a hand guard in between covert and standard. The hand guard is the only difference so it's easy to change.
As for optics I have a primer reticles 5-25, basically an older generation of the Tangent theta scopes. The too less zero stop was made for a multicaliber rifle, and the glass is outstanding.

Got the A1 in 260Rem, pleasantly surprise to find the SRS with 26" barrel's total length an inch shorter than my TRG with 20" barrel. The A1 despite heavy weight balances nicely.

Moving over precision loading from 308 to 260. Need a muzzle for 308 but can get away muzzless with 260.

Got a 338LM conv kit coming in Jan. If all goes well perhaps add 300 Win Mag for cheaper ammo. One chassis/scope to rule them all :)

Same here on planning to sell excess gear for a nice scope. S&B PMII 5-25 tops the list unless TT miraculous drops in price.

Good luck on finding reasonably price SRS gear, just too niche.

Nice pics, my A1 is also black, looks just like yours. Need to take some nice pics like yours with rock and tree background.

A silencer would be sweet, would even pay the gruberment a thief tax to own one. I like my hearing. Stupid and dangerous that it is illegal to drive without a muffler yet can't shot with one.

What calibers are yours?
How do you like the Harris on detachable mount? Debating that vs Atlas or LRA.

The tooless zero stop would be perfect for the multi-caliber. Gonna keep my eye out for used Premier 5-25.

Nice rifles guys - gotta get busy listing stuff on the EE! The SRS A-1 in 6.5 x 47 Lapua or 6.5 Creedmore is calling my name...or maybe one of you guys who just bought one at Reliable Gun's annual sale will get caught by your wife when the credit card bill comes in...I'll keep my eyes peeled on the EE!

Lapua will be shipping their 6.5CM brass in Jan so now all three 6.5 (260, 6.5CM and .47) are avail.

Its in .308. I am set up to reload that already, and I have an abundance of supplies for it. I have a 338LM kit coming soon as well. If the dollar was not in the toilet I would be all over a SAC .223, still considering it.
I have been considering an atlas as well, but frankly the Harris works, it's quick to deploy and solid. The qd is a must as I take it off when I don't want the extra weight. I use it on other rifles too.
You won't regret a premier if you can find one. It's heavy is about my only criticism. It's like the tool less zero was made for this kind of rifle.
I wish I could have a suppressor as well.... maybe someday.

Same here on having an abundance of 308 reloading supplies plus free brass and cheap factory ammo. 260 is a lot more expensive to reload.
Read about the 223 from Short Action customs, where would you source that, any dealer in CDN or direct?

As for dollar tanking fortunately my portfolio is diversify with US stocks bought at par so price has been the same being effectively $5K US/CDN for the SRS A1 (at least the spouse bought it).

SAC sells the .223 conversion direct. I heard that a few are already here.
I would have got it over the .338 if the exchange was not so bad.
I am considering a 6.5x47 barrel in the future as well.

I hope I'm allowed to post despite my lack of SRS ownership......

I think NordicMarksman has TT's in stock....
